Nearly 20 years after he disappeared, the case of former child actor Joseph “Joe” Pichler remains unsolved.
Pichler, who played Kyle Moxon, the younger brother to Jonathan Moxon (James Van Der Beek) in Varsity Blues, vanished in January 2006 when he was just 18 years old. Despite early searches and continued attention over the years, authorities have never determined what happened to him.

Pichler had spent much of his childhood acting. He landed roles throughout the ‘90s in films like Music From Another Room and Beethoven’s 3rd before stepping away from Hollywood as a teenager. His parents were worried about the potential repercussions of being a child star and decided to move back to Washington state in 2002 in hopes of giving him a more typical high school experience.
"I just wanted him to have some normalcy in his life," his mother, Kathy Pichler, told the Kitsap Sun in January 2006. "He's a good boy and took it well, but he wasn't really happy about it. We always kept him really grounded."
He graduated from Bremerton High School in 2005 and had plans to return to acting after he had his braces removed.
However, on January 5, 2006, Pichler went out with friends in Bremerton, Washington. That night he made a phone call to a friend and was never seen again. Four days later, his silver Toyota Corolla was found abandoned in a nearby town and inside was a handwritten note.
The note included a comment from Pichler talking about how he wished he had been a better big brother, along with some poetry. He also said that he wanted his younger brother to have his belongings.
While authorities initially said there was “a good indication that it might have been a suicide,” according to the AP, the note didn’t explicitly state that. His family has long since pushed back on that conclusion.
"He's probably too embarrassed to come home," his sisterShawna Pichler told the Kitsap Sun on January 18, 2006. "In the worst-case scenario, if anything, it's foul play. But not suicide."
His brother, Matthew Pichler, also spoke to the publication and said, “He left that note saying he wanted to start over.”
Over the years, Kathy Pichler has continued to speak publicly about her son’s disappearance and how authorities handled the investigation. In a 2011 essay written for the Surviving Parents Coalition, she criticized what she described as a lack of urgency and follow through.

“Joseph is not a runaway,” she wrote. “That’s the only thing I know for sure about his disappearance.”
She added that despite years passing, her family still had no answers and no closure.
As of today, Pichler remains classified as missing. No confirmed sightings have ever been reported, and no remains have been found. He would have turned 39 this year.
