Jennifer Marshall—the actress who played Max's mom on Seasons 2 and 4 of Stranger Things—is opening up about her Season 5 absence. Marshall was diagnosed with cancer in 2021, but says she was in remission when the show's final season was filming. "I had cancer, I get it. But I was in remission during the shooting of season five. Shooting would have helped me obtain my health insurance through the union. Maybe they had too many characters, idk but obv Susan Hargrove is THE WORST MOTHER EVER LMAO," Marshall captioned an Instagram post on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

"I couldn’t be open and honest with anyone except for my close friends. I feared losing acting opportunities and not being able to pay my mortgage," Marshall wrote in a lengthy Facebook post in October 2022.
"During all this, I was in the middle of shooting season four of 'Stranger Things.' When I showed up to shoot, a few people subtly commented about how much weight I had lost, not realizing the reason why. Someone pulled me aside jokingly and asked if I was 'method,' given my character’s descent into cigarettes and alcohol abuse. I really did laugh at that one, because from an actor’s perspective, that makes sense. Once I revealed why I was so thin, people were so understanding and supportive and went out of their way to help anyway they could," she added.

"I did not know that you had cancer! I'm so glad you beat it!! You were 100% missed we've all been asking about you and I think it's a very valid question," one person wrote in the comments section of Marshall's post.
"When I saw you as Max mom putting laundry up & having conversations with her, I was like okay for some reason we need more of this on the screen. Max's story was so interesting & her with her Mother included was the icing on the cake," someone else said.
Things are looking up for Marshall as 2026 settles in. According to her IMDb page, she has four upcoming projects in the works.
