High Potential Is Back! Everything to Know About the Mid-Season Opener

Is it just me, or has it felt like forever since we caught the mid-season finale of High Potential at the end of October? But the LAPD's dream team is back, baby, with the mid-season premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 6. And what an episode it was! Between the aftermath of Morgan's (Kaitlin Olson) make out session with possible art thief Rhys (Aiden Turner) and her dust-up with Captain Wagner (Steve Howey), there's a lot to unpack ... and predict ... about what's next for the series.

Let's dive right into what this week's episode means for the storyline ahead.

Things start out a little shaky at the start of the episode, titled "The One That Got Away," because Morgan is on thin ice with Wagner, who kicked her off of the art heist case, meanwhile things just got hot and heavy with Rhys, who she suspects is the actual art thief. And Karadec (Daniel Sunjata)? He's just trying to figure out where Morgan's head is at.

That would be Cyrus, the seemingly innocent museum director. He's found dead in the museum's parking garage, much to the befuddlement of everyone involved in the case. Things are so topsy turvy that Morgan is just relieved the killer couldn't have been Rhys, because she was with him at the time the crime was committed.

However Cyrus's death leads Morgan and Karadec to head to his apartment for clues, When they arrive, they're surprised to find his boyfriend, Emilio, who is shaken by the events. A few key items in the home lead Morgan to think that Emilio is part of the art heist, so they bring him in for questioning.

Arthur gives Morgan a sobering wakeup call.

If you remember, Arthur (Mekhi Phifer) was attacked in his car during the mid-season finale. During the Jan. 6 episode, he calls Morgan to let her know about the incident, warning her that whoever came after him, could be after her next because they want Roman's backpack. Morgan insists on sending someone from the LAPD to talk to him about what happened, and that person ends up being Lt. Soto (Judy Reyes). Soto discovers that the person who attacked Arthur is the man she couldn't identify in a photo from Roman's backpack.

Although Arthur promises to come to the precinct to give Soto an actual statement on the crime committed against him, he realizes he's being followed on the way there. He calls Soto to let her know, but swears he can make it to the station unharmed. Hours go by and Soto is getting increasingly worried about his whereabouts. Frankly, she should be because the episode closes out with Arthur's truck looking very empty, with his cell phone on the ground and no one in sight.

Nothing good at the moment. After the team has closed the art heist case (it was actually the wealthy couple who owned The Young Girl painting who "stole" it in an attempt to commit insurance fraud), they're unwinding at a bar over drinks. Unbeknownst to them, Arthur's mystery attacker is seated in a corner nearby, watching their every move.

Will Morgan and Karadec get romantic any time soon?

Right now that's looking like a no, although Karadec is definitely keeping an eye on Morgan's interactions with Wagner, with whom she has plenty of flirty banter. If I were to place bets on this, I don't think we'll see any meaningful steps towards a romantic encounter between these two until the season finale, if not season three.
