Jesus Gomez declares for 2026 NFL Draft after reviving ASU kicking department

In his lone season with the Arizona State Sun Devils, kicker Jesus Gomez injected life into a previously struggling phase of special teams and on Tuesday announced he will be entering the 2026 NFL Draft.

The senior expressed his gratitude to his teammates and several coaches, including newly promoted special teams coordinator Jack Nudo. He had previously spent three seasons at Eastern Michigan before transferring to Tempe.

“To Coach (Charlie) Ragle, Coach Nudo, Coach (Kenny) Dillingham and everyone on staff, thank you for trusting me and making me a better player and person,” Gomez posted on X. “Thank you for the opportunity to be a Sun Devil. To all the coaches at Eastern Michigan, thank you for taking a chance on me and helping me achieve one of my dreams.”

Gomez’s 22 made field goals in 2025 are tied for 10th in FBS while his 73.3% make rate (22 for 30) is tied for 101st in the nation. He was nearly perfect between 20-29 yards (6 for 7) and 30-39 yards (8 for 9) and posted 5 for 10 and 2 for 3 efforts from 40-49 and 50+ yards, respectively.

His longest field goal hit of the season was 54 yards, which came in ASU’s Sun Bowl loss to ACC champion Duke.

Gomez nailed his fair share of game-winning kicks for the Sun Devils (8-5), first on the road against Baylor to begin Big 12 play and capped by a 49-yarder to beat West Virginia in the penultimate game at Mountain America Stadium. He also completed his first pass in college against the Mountaineers on a two-point conversion to tight end Cameron Harpole.

Gomez took home four weekly conference honors for his special teams play in 2025 and was listed on the preseason watch list for the Lou Groza Award, which annually goes to the nation’s top kicker. Oklahoma’s Tate Sandell (24 for 27 and 8 for 9 from 50+) took the title.

After struggling mightily in the kicking department into mid-October of the 2024 season, Dillingham called for open kicking tryouts at ASU, which the school athletic director Graham Rossini followed through on holding.

ASU kickers in 2024 combined to go 11 for 20 on field goals and the early inefficiency led to Dillingham and Co. keeping the offense on the field for fourth down more often than not.

Gomez helped remedy this for at least a season.

Ole Miss’s Lucas Carneiro, Georgia’s Peyton Woodring and Michigan’s Dominic Zvada, a Chandler native, are the top-three prospects available, according to ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest 2026 NFL Draft Big Board rankings.
