Comedy icon Nikki Glaser isn't afraid to go pretty far with a joke, but the Golden Globes host and actress learned the hard way who American audiences don't want to hear her make fun of.
During an appearance on Tuesday's episode of CBS Mornings, Glaser, 41, explained that she had been working the stand-up stage at the comedy clubs to test out material for her upcoming gig as host of the Golden Globe Awards on January 11.
"I'm trying out my monologue around LA at the clubs here, and just even any joke about Julia Roberts, they are not there for," she said. "You cannot make fun of America's sweetheart. Whatever I end up saying about her, that is the most fine-tuned joke that I've worked on so hard, because it is very delicate."
"I mean, they were booing, and I was like, ‘Is she here?’" Glaser continued. "It's insane."
"Nikki, Julia is everywhere," CBS Mornings host Gayle King replied.
"Yeah, she's all around us always," Glaser noted.
While she may be up on the stage with the biggest names in Hollywood, Glaser explained that she's ultimately just a huge fan of the stars.
“I am a huge fan of these people,” she shared. “It’s easy for me to take down the newer batch of actresses and actors who are younger than me. It's like, ‘OK, I can make fun of you. I'm like a veteran.’ But when it's people that I grew up admiring, it's a different approach this year.”
Glaser said she wants to be funny, but without being too vicious.
“You have to be very delicate about making jokes that aren't going to ruin anyone's night,” she added. “But you also want to give the people at home something to laugh at, and you want to poke fun at the people that they're dying for you to make fun of. People at home want you to make fun of the A-listers.”
She Will Sometimes Run the Joke By the Star Ahead of Time
If a joke is particularly touchy, Glaser said she'll occasionally run it by the person it's about ahead of time. That's what she did last year for a joke about record producer and musician Benny Blanco, who is married to Selena Gomez. Those who remember (or have Google) will recall the joke described him as "Benny Blanco, who is here because of the genie who granted him that wish.”
