Arizona football has addressed two big positional needs so far since the FBS transfer portal opened, grabbing Illinois tight end Cole Rusk and Arkansas State long snapper Drew Nicolson.
Rusk, at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, has one year of eligibility remaining with his commitment on Tuesday and will likely step into a large workload with Sam Olson (2025: 17 catches, 135 yards, two touchdowns) and Cameron Barmore graduating and Keyan Burnett in the portal.
He is considered the sixth-best tight end in the portal, according to On3.
Rusk registered a touchdown on 19 catches and 217 yards last season for the Fighting Illini after missing his entire junior year because of a knee injury. He was named to the FCS All-American Third Team in his lone year at Murray State in 2023.
Regardless of his eventual usage, Rusk will be receiving looks from redshirt senior Noah Fifita, who said after the Wildcats’ Holiday Bowl loss he will be returning to Arizona next season.
Georgetown linebacker Cooper Blomstrom committed to Arizona on Tuesday, and despite him primarily playing across the defensive line, WildcatAuthority.com’s Jason Scheer reported that he will likely “move around” and be a replacement for graduating Riley Wilson (2025: 23 solo tackles, three sacks, two interceptions).
Arizona also seeks to bolster one of its special teams operations in punting with the addition of Nicolson, who is a Tempe native and has two years of eligibility remaining following a redshirt year and one season apiece at Arkansas State and Akron. He was the Wildcats’ first portal commitment on Monday.
