49ers adding veteran linebacker Kyzir White; Cardinals eyeing Saleh

SANTA CLARA – Kyzir White, three years after helping the Philadelphia Eagles wallop the 49ers for a Super Bowl berth, is coming to aid the 49ers’ injury-depleted linebacker corps entering Sunday’s wild-card playoff game in Philadelphia.

“Let’s boogie,” White posted on the social-media platform X in response to Jordan Schultz’s initial report of the 49ers’ Tuesday acquisition.

The 49ers have yet to officially announce White’s signing but he is expected to join the practice squad, according to a team source.

White, 29, is an eight-year veteran who joins a unit that infamously lost Fred Warner to a Week 6 ankle injury and his replacement, Tatum Bethune, to a season-ending groin tear in Saturday’s 13-3 loss to Seattle.

Also maligned are linebackers Dee Winters (ankle) and Luke Gifford (quadriceps) entering Sunday’s 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Lincoln Financial Field.

The 49ers’ other linebackers on their roster are Curtis Robinson and Garret Wallow, although Eric Kendricks is expected to move up after three practice-squad elevations and potentially start Sunday. Jalen Graham and Andrew Farmer II also are on the practice squad.

White’s only career playoff appearances came with the 2022 Eagles. He had six tackles in their 31-7 rout of the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game before another four tackles in a Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

A veteran of 93 games with 618 tackles, White spent most of this season on the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad. He played just one game (a Sept. 21 loss to Indianapolis) and has dealt with a hamstring injury. However, he made a career-game 137 tackles (nine for loss) last year in his second season with the Arizona Cardinals.

White was a West Virginia teammate of 49ers’ right tackle Colton McKivitz before getting drafted in the fourth round by the Los Angeles Chargers (2018-21).

Monday, coach Kyle Shanahan ruled Bethune out for the season, noted that Winters and Gifford will be evaluated as the week goes, and a Warner comeback is not in the picture until possibly the NFC Championship Game.

    SALEH DRAWING INTEREST

As six teams begin coaching searches, one is the Arizona Cardinals, and they’re reportedly interested in 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

Saleh can not officially interview until the Tuesday after Sunday’s wild-card game for what would be his second head-coaching post, having left his first stint as 49ers coordinator to serve as the New York Jets coach from 2021 until five games into 2024. Arizona fired Jonathan Gannon on Monday after three seasons.

    BROADCAST PLANS

After Greg Papa’s inspiring return to the 49ers’ radio broadcast booth Saturday night, his leukemia battle will keep him from attending Sunday’s wild-card game and he will be replaced again by Guy Haberman on KNBR 680-AM’s broadcast.

Fox Sports will deploy it’s No. 1 crew for the television broadcast: Tom Brady, Kevin Burkhardt, Erin Andrews and Tom Rinaldi.

    BELICHICK ON 49ERS-EAGLES

Former NFL coach Bill Belichick, a Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist this year, sized up the wild-card matchups and said this about the 49ers-Eagles on SiriusXM NFL Radio:

“Nobody’s dealt with more injuries than the 49ers have. They’ve been banged up across the board and that’s really hurt ’em defensively. Well, it’s hurt ’em offensively, but it’s really hurt ’em defensively. The big question for Philadelphia, I think, is how are they going to play offensively and how’s the quarterback? How’s that going to go? Philadelphia can, as we know, get hot and can be as good as anybody. They’ve been winning a lot on defense this year. So it’ll be an interesting matchup there. Two great coaches, Coach Shanahan, Coach Sirianni and Coach Fangio on defense. It’ll be a good matchup from that standpoint. But Philadelphia looks better on paper. They’ll have to go out there and not turn the ball over and play the type of defense they’ve been playing this season and do a good job on the 49ers.”
