Notre Dame Men Sweep Minnesota and Tampa; Minnesota Women Top Tampa in Early 2026 Dual

The Notre Dame men, Tampa, and Minnesota opened their 2026 in a triple dual meet on the men’s side and a double dual on the women’s side. Notre Dame swept division II powerhouse Tampa and Minnesota on the men’s side while Minnesota emerged victorious over Tampa in both the men’s and women’s meets.

    Men’s Meet Recap

    Notre Dame won most of the events including both relays. They opened the meet with the top two times in the 200 medley relay touching 1st in 1:26.89 with their team of Zack Oswald (22.40), Jack Armour (24.61), Marcus Reyes-Gentry (20.62), and Shane Eckler (19.26).

    The Fighting Irish ‘B’ team finished 2nd in 1:28.41, coming in just under two tenths ahead of Tampa who finished 3rd in 1:28.48.

    Notre Dame also closed the meet with a win in the 200 free relay. Eckler led off in 20.18. Min-Gyn Jang swam 20.10 in 2nd, Reyes-Gentry was 19.65 in 3rd and Tommy Janton anchored in 20.18.

    Freshmen Eckler and Armour both pulled a lot of weight for the team with each taking home two individual event wins.

    Eckler swept the sprint freestyle events, swimming 19.91 in the 50 and 44.42 in the 100, while Armour was the breaststroke champion, winning the 100 in 54.65 and the 200 in 1:57.67.

    Other Notre Dame individual event wins came from relay swimmers Reyes-Gentry, who won the 100 back in 46.22, and Oswald, who won the 200 back in 1:46.72.

    The final Irish event winner was Jeremy Kelly, who swam 1:37.91 in the 200 freestyle for the top time.

    Minnesota had a few event wins as well. Jacob Johnson won the 200 fly in 1:44.00, Daniel Eichel swam the top time in the 500 free of 4:24.67, and Joe Polyak won the 200 IM in 1:48.43.

    Finally, Tampa’s Jacob Hamlin, the division II record holder in the event, won the 1000 freestyle in 9:07.64.

    Women’s Recap

    Minnesota and Tampa raced a normal dual meet while the Notre Dame women swam at Miami on the same day. The Minnesota team came out on top, scoring 186 points to Tampa’s 76, due to their overwhelming number of event wins.

    The Gophers took the top time in all but three events, which all went to the same Tampa swimmer.

    Minnesota also swept both relays, starting with their 200 medley team of Ava Yablonski (25.09), Ava Goodno (28.17), Morgan Thomas (23.45), and Livi Wanner (23.11) swimming 1:39.82 to come in nearly three seconds ahead of the Tampa ‘A’ team’s time of 1:42.63.

    The 200 freestyle relay saw Wanner and Thomas reprise their roles. Wanner led off in 23.81 while Thomas swam 22.66 in the 2nd leg. From there Paige Moreen was 23.21 in 3rd and Mina Kaljevic anchored in 23.02 to bring the team home in 1:32.70, more than two seconds ahead of the Minnesota ‘B’ team that swam 1:35.12.Tampa finished 3rd in 1:35.34.

    Thomas went on to win the 50 free in 22.81 while Kaljevic swam 50.47 to win the 100 free. Wanner finished 2nd in both events, touching in 23.04 and 51.16.

    Thomas also won the 100 fly in 52.90, coming in nearly two seconds ahead of teammate Claire Reinke, who swam 54.84, and Kaljevic won the 200 free in 1:50.74, coming in just ahead of her sister and teammate Anja Kaljevic, who was 1:50.81.

    Ava Yablonski, who swam backstroke on the medley, won the 100 back (53.82) and 200 back (1:58.66).

    There were two more individual event winners for Minnesota. Katie McCarthy swept the distance events, touching in 9:57.74 in the 1000 — the only swimmer under 10:00 in the event — and 4:50.46 in the 500 free, and Rachel Conley won the 200 fly in 2:00.15.

    Foltz started her meet with a win in the 100 breast, touching in 1:03.30 to come in just over two tenths ahead of Minnesota’s Kiera Mulins‘ 1:03.54.

    She also won the 200 breast in a new season best 2:14.64, the 5th fastest time in Division II this season, and the 200 IM in 2:03.75, which was also a new season best.

    Minnesota is back in action on January 9th against Florida Atlantic.

    Notre Dame will race Kentucky and Purdue in a tri-meet on January 9th.

    Tampa will race Keiser on the 9th at home, and then will host Lynn and Wingate on the 10th to close out their regular season.
