Clashes resumed on the evening of Tuesday, 6 January, around the Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ashrafieh neighborhoods in northern Aleppo city, after a period of relative calm that included shells landing in the area, Enab Baladi’s correspondent reported.
The correspondent said the fighting broke out again using medium and heavy weapons and artillery, amid mounting tension and fear among civilians. This coincided with the sound of shells falling near the clash zone.
Earlier in the day, the area had seen a security escalation and intermittent clashes between government forces and the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), before conditions calmed for several hours and then flared again.
Aleppo governor suspends work
Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib announced the suspension of work on Wednesday, 7 January, at all public and private schools and universities, as well as government departments inside Aleppo city, citing the current security situation.
In a statement, al-Gharib said the decision came after a number of hospitals and service institutions were targeted as a result of what he described as indiscriminate artillery shelling attributed to the SDF. He added that the governorate also decided to cancel all collective and social events during this period, to protect civilians.
The governor explained that the decision excludes medical and service staff and emergency teams. He said the relevant authorities are following field developments and taking the necessary measures to ensure the city’s security and stability.
He added that the governorate understands the impact the decision may have on the education process, but said the safety of students and educational staff remains above all considerations.
Asayish statement
For its part, the Asayish issued a statement on the security escalation in the Sheikh Maqsoud, al-Ashrafieh, and Bani Zaid neighborhoods in northern Aleppo city.
It said what it called factions affiliated with the Damascus government launched intense attacks using various types of heavy weapons, including tanks, heavy artillery, and Grad and Katyusha rocket launchers, as well as mortar shells and DShK heavy machine guns.
The statement said the shelling hit most areas in the three neighborhoods, resulting in civilian casualties and injuries. It added that many homes and buildings sustained significant damage due to shells and rockets hitting them.
It added that the Internal Security Forces defended the three neighborhoods “within the framework of their right to legitimate response,” as the statement put it, and thwarted five infiltration attempts into the area, resulting in casualties among the attackers.
The statement said the neighborhoods saw a cautious calm that lasted for about two hours, before the factions resumed their attacks violently, particularly with artillery, tanks, and rocket launchers, increasing security tensions in the area.
Casualties and displacement
Aleppo Governorate had announced that three civilians were killed and 15 others injured, including children and nine employees of the city’s Agriculture Directorate, due to shelling carried out by SDF forces from the Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ashrafieh neighborhoods against surrounding neighborhoods in Aleppo city.
A child was also killed by shelling, Enab Baladi’s correspondent reported.
A shell fired from SDF positions in al-Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud also hit the main gate of Zahi Azraq Hospital in Aleppo’s Bustan al-Basha neighborhood, according to Enab Baladi’s correspondent.
Al-Ashrafieh and surrounding areas in Aleppo city saw widespread displacement on Tuesday, as many residents were forced to leave their homes and seek safer places due to the escalation in shelling and the exchange of fire in the area.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent said residents are taking alternative routes and trying to keep away from clash points, amid anxiety and fear among civilians, especially as attacks continue on densely populated neighborhoods and security tensions persist in the city.
Northern Aleppo neighborhoods have seen recurring tension since Tuesday morning, 6 January, as both sides accuse each other of violating the ceasefire and targeting residential areas. The situation has coincided with security measures and precautionary road closures inside the city.
