POINT LOMA – A total of $277,000 in prize money will be on the line from Jan. 26 through Feb. 1 when the San Diego Open tennis tournament takes place at Point Loma’s Barnes Tennis Center.
A full list of participants hasn’t been announced yet, but several ranked players in both the men’s ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour are expected to participate in the event, which is one of Southern California’s biggest professional tennis tournaments of the year.
This year, the men’s ATP Challenger offers a total of $177,000 in prize money and features a 32-player men’s singles draw, a 16-team men’s doubles draw, and a 24-player men’s qualifying singles draw. Singles and doubles champions will receive 100 ATP ranking points.
Meanwhile, the $100,000 ITF women’s 100 tournament is set up with a 32-player women’s singles draw, a 16-team doubles draw, and a 24-player qualifying singles draw. Singles and doubles winners will earn 100 Women’s Tennis Association ranking points.
The event’s expected to draw top and up-and-coming men’s and women’s tennis players, possibly including ATP top-100-ranked American right-hander Eliot Spizzirri, who was victorious in last year’s men’s singles event and also won the doubles event along with fellow U.S. right-hander Tyler Zink.
The top 300-ranked Zink, who also won the 2023 Lexington Challenger and the 2019 US Open – Boys’ doubles titles with Spizzirri, is also a potential participant in this year’s SD Open.
“There will be quite a few players returning from the Australian Open in Melbourne in mid-to-late January, who will be looking for a tournament to play when they arrive back in the States. This will be the perfect event for them,” said Ryan Redondo, tournament co-director. “We are anticipating very strong men’s and women’s player fields.”
The tournament’s opening day, Jan. 26, will be highlighted by qualifying matches; admission is free that day for all attendees. Also, tournament officials have said that all kids age 17 and under will receive free general admission access from Jan. 27 through Jan. 31 with a ticketed adult.
A ticket upgrade option, which includes access to the tournament VIP Lounge, free beverages, and food, is also available. The upgrade for sessions taking place Jan. 26 through Jan. 29 is $50 per day. Fans can also purchase the VIP upgrade for sessions on Friday, Jan. 30, through Feb. 1 for $70 per day.
Tournament officials are advising fans to get tickets early, as seating in the main stadium will be limited to about 700 spaces.
The limited seating is expected to “make for an incredible venue to watch matches,” according to Redondo, who added that matches will also be held on the Barnes Tennis Center’s six outer courts.
