4Reel Fishing: Water=Best gift ever

Happy New Year

Say, did you hear about the awesome news?  I am totally blown away by it!    Yup, this good news is the best Christmas gift we could ever get!  Well, it looks like we all have dodged a major bullet!     As reported by Keely Covello, the United States Federal Government actually listened to “We the People” and intervened to end the removal of the Scott Dam which holds the water back to form Lake Pillsbury.  PLUS, PG&E withdrew its bid to cut the water from the Van Arsdale Dam that flows to the people of Potter Valey, then on to Lake Mendocino and in doing so, providing water to over 600,000 people.  And oh yeah, also water for fire protection.   Yep, we all just received the most practical Christmas gift we could ever get..

We all need to send some love to Keely for shining a flood light on this to the national media and the federal government.         Check her out on social media,  AMERICA UNWON.

Blue Lake: Well, fishing has slowed on the upper Blue Lake.  Not so much because there isn’t any fish/trout to be caught. The rain has had the fishermen looking out their windows for a break in the weather, so they can make a mad dash to the lake.  Before the rain began, some nice trout were being caught trolling.  Even a few have been hooked from the shore along Hwy. 20.  Maybe we will catch a day or so of sun to have a chance to get on the water soon??

Clearlake: Well the way to catch fish on Clear Lake is to use minnows.  I’m one of those that would rather NOT use live bait, but if you want to catch some bass, it’s the ticket for the winter months.   Consider using crankbaits, jerkbaits, or plastics first, then if nothing goes, try live bait.  It’s all good fun anyway!

The catfishin’ has been hit or miss, anglers that have had some success, have also been using minnows.  The hot spots have been, the Indian Beach area, Shag Rock and the north side of the lake.

Lake Sonoma:  Tough, the fish are pretty tight lipped on Sonoma.  You have to work at it pretty hard just to get two or three bass.  Pretty much, everything being caught is smallish, 1 to 3 pounds.  The most successful lure has been a Lucky Craft LV500 crankbait.  Try casting it out and letting it sink to the bottom, give it a twitch then slowly reel it in.  Give it another jerk and let it sit on the bottom.  Repeat.  Usually a good color for the winter months, will be something bright.  I would start with chartreuse.  I have never tried live bait on Sonoma.  Maybe it would be worth a shot?

Be KIND – Be SAFE – Watch out for the other guy.

New Year,  2026 is going to be wonderful !
