Gwyneth Paltrow opened up about the professional consequences she faced after referring to her divorce from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin as a "conscious uncoupling."
The Oscar-winning actress, 53, appeared on the new episode of Good Hang with Amy Poehler and revealed that she was fired from a movie after announcing her divorce from Martin, which she described at the time as "conscious uncoupling."
When asked by Poehler whether she had ever been fired from a job before, Paltrow spoke candidly.
“I was supposed to do a movie at one point and it was like right after the conscious uncoupling thing with Chris, and there was a lot of harsh stuff in the press,” Paltrow replied. “I think the distributor was like, this might be too hot to touch.”
Paltrow went on to say, “So that was great because I was getting a divorce, and then I got fired. So it was so awesome.”
The Public Reaction to 'Conscious Uncoupling'
Poehler told Paltrow that she was "ahead of her time" by declaring the divorce to be a conscious uncoupling. The term, which Paltrow has been clear that she did not come up with herself, was introduced to her by her and Martin's couple's therapist. However, Paltrow said she did understand why some people reacted so negatively to the concept.
“Say you had had a really nasty divorce, or your parents had had a really nasty divorce. And then you hear this idea that like, it doesn't have to be done this way,” she explained. “I think the implicit learning is like, 'Oh, f---. Like, they're saying I did something wrong.' ”
Paltrow explained that the intention was never to mock anyone.
“That makes sense to me, like, 'Oh no, is the inference that I mess someone up.' Like, that's not a nice thing to contemplate. So I do understand why it was so personal for people, because it was. You only see that kind of reaction when it's personal,” she noted.

While Paltrow and Poehler spoke openly about divorce, they did have plenty of hilarious moments. Paltrow admitted she greatly regretted skipping the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live, a show on which she's appeared many times.
"It was a mistake, and I regret it, so I just want to say that out loud," Paltrow shared.
"You just thought, 'oh that's fun, I'll just wait another 50 years,'" Poehler said sarcastically.
