After years of hints, references and the occasional cameo, Fox's 2000s-era X-Men have officially entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday.
Said trailer gives viewers a first look at the new, reimagined version of the original X-Men from the 2000 film, including glimpses at Patrick Stewart's Professor X, Ian McKellen's Magneto and James Marsden's fan-favorite Cyclops in a comic-accurate blue-and-yellow superhero suit.
In the new trailer, fans follow Professor X as he wanders the abandoned halls of the X-Mansion, all the while Magneto gives dreamily narrates about the inevitability of death.
"Death comes for us all," McKellen's longtime X-Men adversary ruminates. "That's all I know for sure. But the question isn't, 'Are you prepared to die?' The question is, 'Who will you be when you close your eyes?'
As McKellen's narration continues, the trailer shows Professor X and a disheveled Magneto reuniting over a game of chess, the two old friends clasping hands and smiling warmly at one another.
Following this reunion, the trailer then abruptly cuts to a short scene showing an enraged Cyclops tearing off his trademark visor, his eyes spewing out red beams amidst a field of burning debris.
"The X-Men will return in Avengers: Doomsday," the trailer then states, flashing to a cutdown to the new Avengers' release later this December.
The trailer marks the third major teaser highlighting some of the major players prominently featured in Avengers: Doomsday. Late last year, audiences gloried at the movie's first official teaser showing off the return of Chris Evans' Captain America, followed by a second teaser marking the return of Chris Hemsworth's Thor.
In addition to McKellen, Stewart and Marsden, several noteworthy cast members from the original 2000s' X-Men films are slated to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, including Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique).
