As the Blackhawks continue celebrating their Centennial season, the organization has produced a four-part docuseries titled “Always an Original” that spotlights specific significant parts of that incredible history. The segments of the series align with how the team has segmented their in-arena celebrations for home games throughout the season.
The first part of the series looked at some of the firsts authored by the Blackhawks franchise, from the origins of the hat trick to Stan Mikita’s stick blade and the goal horn. The second part of the series celebrated the Chicago Stadium, the old, wonderful, smelly barn that housed the team for some great teams and players.
On Monday, the Blackhawks released the third part of the series. It’s titled “The Banner Years,” and focuses on the seven players who have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup three times as members of the Blackhawks of the 2010s.
Honestly, this one felt personal. I grew up a Blackhawks fan and am old enough to have attended games at the old barn across the street. But where this episode begins — the early 2000s — is when I got out of college and started buying tickets to games. Yeah, I was one of those 24-year-olds still using my college ID a couple years after it was active to get cheap tickets at the window.
I bought season tickets when Toews and Kane arrived. And I started writing about the Blackhawks during their rookie seasons. My first jersey purchase after the lockout was a red Seabrook. Followed by a Winter Classic (2009) Toews. Followed by a 2010 Canadian Olympic Toews. Followed by a red Keith with a 2010 Stanley Cup patch on the shoulder. Followed by a USA Olympic Kane.
The first time I was credentialed to cover the Blackhawks was for the 2010 Stanley Cup Final. Watching the young guys who grew up in front of us (well, the 3-4,000 who were there each night) reach their potential and win championships is still, to this day, surreal.
For all of the high drafts picks we have seen in every sport in Chicago who never turned out to be great, to see a group of grinders get in line behind their captain and other veteran leaders and become great was remarkable.
And they ended a championship drought of nearly 50 years.
If you were there for the dynasty, this is a great 34 minutes. If you’re too young to know some of the back stories on how those seven guys ended up in Chicago, this gives you just a little bit of an idea of how they all arrived in Chicago.
It’s a must watch.
