A death row inmate who formed a close bond with Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner says he received one of Michele’s final messages days after she was killed.
Nanon Williams, 51, told NBC News in an article shared on Monday, January 5, that Michele sent him an uplifting email just hours before her death—but prison screening delays meant he didn’t see it until after the Reiners had been murdered.
Williams said he first learned of the Reiners’ deaths while scrolling through news articles on his state-issued tablet. Shocked, he immediately sent Michele a message asking, “Please tell me the news is lying.”
Williams is currently incarcerated at the W.F. Ramsey Unit, a maximum-security prison outside Houston, where he has been held since he was 17 for a murder he maintains he did not commit. The friendship between Williams and the Reiners began more than a decade ago after they attended a live performance of Lyrics From Lockdown, a spoken-word multimedia project built in part around Williams’ prison writings. What started as correspondence grew into a near-daily exchange of emails, with the couple coming to view Williams as family.

“They became like family,” their daughter Romy Reiner said in a statement obtained by the outlet. Williams agreed, telling NBC News, “They became a part of me.”
Michele’s final email was sent after she and Rob attended re-watched Lyrics From Lockdown alongside Billy Crystal. In the message, Michele described how deeply moved Crystal was by the show, calling it “amazing,” and adding, “We all said that we can't wait to watch it with you.” The Reiner’s also allegedly sent two other emails, though the contents of those remains unknown.
The revelations arrive amid a broader and deeply troubling investigation into the Reiners’ deaths. According to records obtained by PEOPLE, police had responded to welfare-related and mental health calls at the Reiners’ Brentwood home in 2019. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with his parent’s deaths. He remains in custody without bail, and authorities have not disclosed a motive.
