Mark Hamill Reveals His First Reaction to Star Wars

Actor Mark Hamill, 74, got candid about his initial thoughts regarding the first Star Warsfilm.

During a January 2026 episode of The Hollywood Reporter Actor Roundtable, Hamill revealed if he knew the Star Wars franchise would be such a massive success during the production of the first movie, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, which was released in 1977. Hamill, who famously played Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy, suggested he was a bit taken aback by the script, written by George Lucas, upon first read.

"What was interesting is I got the part without having read the whole script. They only gave you a scene. And I'm thinking, 'Who talks like this? I mean, is this a sendup of Flash Gordon or whatever?'" said Hamill during the interview.

He then noted he had auditioned with Harrison Ford, who ended up playing Han Solo. Hamill said he asked Ford to help him form an opinion about the script as he had appeared in Lucas' 1973 film, American Graffiti. According to Hamill, Ford was "no help at all."

Hamill said he eventually asked Lucas about the scene.

"He goes, 'Uh, well, let's just do it. And we'll talk about it later.' Translation, let's just do it. We'll never ever, ever talk about it. So, I was totally in the dark about the tone or the style [of the movie]," said Hamill during the THR Actor Roundtable.

Hamill said once he "got the part," he was able to read the full script. He said he was thoroughly entertained and appreciated the feminism of Princess Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher.

"You got a princess. She was no damsel in distress. 'You call this a rescue? Give me that gun.' Just fantastic," said Hamill.

In addition, he said he was charmed by the droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO.

"The robots arguing over whose fault it is. I mean, I was the straight man to these robots, but I thought it was hilarious," said Hamill.

Hamill also said he correctly guessed that Star Wars would be successful. He clarified that he "had no idea it turned into what it did."

Hamill returned as Luke for the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). While speaking to ComicBook.com in May 2025, Hamill said he doesn't plan on ever playing the beloved character again.

“We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that. But my deal is, I had my time. I’m appreciative of that, but I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters,” said the actor to the publication.

He clarified that he is "so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting [him] be a part of that back in the day."
