Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Turkish butterfly Talent Defne Tanığ has committed to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for the fall of 2026, joining the Tar Heel women’s 2026 recruiting class.

I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill! I want to thank my family, friends and coaches for their support throughout this process. I can’t wait to be part of this amazing team! Go Heels!

Tanığ hails from Istanbul, Turkey, and represents Enka Spor Kulübü. This past summer, Tanığ represented her home nation, Turkey, at the World Aquatics Junior Championships (LCM) in Singapore. Tanığ competed in two individual events, finishing 19th overall in both the 200 backstroke (2:16.10) and the 200 fly (2:15.52). She also competed on Turkey’s 4 x 100 medley relay in prelims, splitting 1:02.20 on the fly leg.

Earlier in the summer, Tanığ competed at the LEN European Junior Championships, where she reached the semifinals in the 200 fly, finishing 10th overall in 2:14.59. She also raced the 100 fly, finishing 35th in 1:02.13, and the 400 IM, where she wound up 14th overall in 4:54.68.

Tanığ’s fastest ever 200 fly in long course came in May of 2024, when she touched in 2:10.96. She also boasts a best time in long course 200 IM of 2:18.02, from the Turkey Sports Club Long Course Junior, Youth and Open Age Championships in August. Along with her butterfly skillset, Tanığ holds a strong best in the short course 200 back in 2:08.57 from the Turkish Open National Team Selection from August.

    Best Times Converted to SCY:

    Event Time SCY Conversion 100 Fly (LCM) 1:00.83 53.54 200 Fly (LCM) 2:10.96 1:55.45 200 IM (LCM) 2:18.02 2:01.45 200 Back (SCM) 2:08.57 1:55.82 200 Free (SCM) 2:00.83 1:48.85

The Tar Heel women finished 6th at the 2025 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships last season.

Based on Tanığ’s converted best times, she would have been projected to finish 11th in the 200 fly, 35th in the 100 fly, and 41st in the 200 IM.

Tanığ brings valuable international experience to a loaded ACC conference. Fortunately for her, the potential in her 200 fly within the conference looks to be a useful addition to a Tar Heel squad that scored 24 points in that event last year.

Taylor Bloom, a Tar Heel junior this season, was the highest finisher in the 200 fly last season at ACCs for North Carolina, but she added over two seconds from her prelims time at finals to finish 8th in 1:58.47.

Based on those conversions for Tanığ, she would rank as the fastest 200 flyer on this season’s roster for UNC, and the 3rd fastest 100 flyer.

Tanığ joins Kenzie Sellars, Morgan Farlow, Tiffany Murillo Jinete, Nehir Oner, and Catherine Pawlaski in the Tar Heels 2026 recruiting class.
