Retired Rock Legend, 71, Announces Huge Tour Over 20 Years Since Last Album

It seems like the term "retirement" doesn't mean a whole lot in the world of rock and roll, with bands like The Who launching multiple "farewell" tours over the course of their careers.

To that end, another classic rocker who once called it quits is heading back out on the road: Former Van Halen frontman and prolific solo artist David Lee Roth.

In an Instagram post today, Jan. 5, the 71-year-old rock star announced a 30-date tour of the U.S. and Canada, scheduled to kick off on April 16 in Washington. Roth wore a bright yellow jacket in the photo, which was accompanied by the message: "davidleeroth.com/tour Presale begins tomorrow JAN 6th @ 10AM local Public On-Sale: Friday, JAN 9th @ 10 AM local"

Commenters were definitely thrilled to hear the news.

"You were my first ROCK concert ever in 1987 or 1988. Still not sure. Montreal, QC Canada. I was 12 or 13. This would be cool to see Canadian dates. Full circle," one longtime fan recalled.

"I have to go!" declared a second person, with a third adding, "Sweet jacket @davidleeroth looking forward to your tour!"

Last May, Roth — who hasn't released a solo album in over 20 years — ended a five-year break from performing live at the M3 Festival in Maryland.

"We've reached the end of my first retirement," Roth quipped at the time, per Ultimate Classic Rock. "How many retirements did Rocky have, nine?"

David Lee Roth said he was retiring in 2021

In October of 2021, Roth announced his retirement, telling the Las Vegas Journal-Review, “I am throwing in the shoes. I’m retiring. This is the first, and only, official announcement...You’ve got the news. Share it with the world.”

As Roth went on to explain, the death of former bandmate Eddie Van Halen made him reflective about his future.

“I am encouraged and compelled to really come to grips with how short time is, and my time is probably even shorter...I thought I might have been the first [Van Halen member to die], frankly," he explained. "I might have thought the Marlboro Man would’ve got me. ‘Hey Ed, objects in the rear-view mirror are probably me.’ And my doctors, my handlers, compelled me to really address that every time I go onstage, I endanger that future.”

Roth's upcoming tour is scheduled to run through August 2026 at the time of this writing.
