Wes Streeting: The first nine conditions you can be treated for anywhere in the UK

This government has delivered significant reforms since July 2024.

Waiting lists are falling for the first time in decades, patient satisfaction with GPs is rising, and we’ve boosted historically sluggish NHS productivity. After years of neglect, the NHS is on the road to recovery.

But while that progress is significant, what everybody wants is a health service fit for the next century and beyond. That requires more than evolution – it demands revolution.

So this government is harnessing digital technology like never before in our public sector to fundamentally change how people interact with it for generations to come.

Whether that’s through digital ID cards, the NHS App, or embracing AI, we’re using tech to make public services more democratic and more personalised, bringing them in line with the 21st century standards people expect.

Many of us have become used to living our lives through technology. Whether that’s ordering a cab or a takeaway, we now expect services on demand at the touch of a button.

    How NHS Online will work

But we want to go further. In September, the Prime Minister announced NHS Online: an entirely new – and entirely optional – digital service that will cut waiting lists by allowing patients to connect with clinicians anywhere in the country.

When a patient is referred by a GP, they will have the legal right to choose specialist care from a brand-new online hospital.

They will then be able to book directly through the NHS App and be seen by specialists from anywhere in England, all from the comfort of their own home.

Today we’re announcing the first nine conditions patients will be able to access treatment for via NHS Online when the service goes live in 2027: ophthalmology, gynaecology, urology and gastroenterology.

These cover some of the conditions with the longest waits, such as endometriosis and inflammatory bowel disease.

    The nine conditions are:

Glaucoma, medical retina (including age-related macular degeneration), cataracts, inflammatory bowel disease, iron deficiency anaemia, prostate enlargement, raised PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen), menopause and menstrual problems, which may be a sign of endometriosis.

This isn’t just about democratising access to the NHS. It’s going to help drive down waiting lists and boost capacity, delivering up to 8.5 million appointments and assessments in its first three years.

To put that in context, that’s four times more than the average NHS trust.

Plan is to speed up treatment

An established and frustrating pattern in the NHS sees patients referred by their GP, travelling miles to be assessed by a specialist, only to wait months for that doctor to advise on next steps. It’s a process I’m sure many readers of The i Paper will be all too familiar with.

NHS Online will transform this. Expert clinicians nationwide, with all the necessary information at their fingertips, will be able to log in and move patients to the next step of their pathway.

The administrative burden will be spread out and sped up. Patients won’t have to travel to a busy hospital just to answer the same questions and have their notes reviewed from scratch.

NHS Online won’t replace traditional care. Patients will always have the choice of face-to-face appointments, and those who need physical examinations or procedures will continue to receive them either at hospital or local hubs nearby.

We are working with doctors and patients to design the service with their needs at heart.

A new era is on the horizon. We’re bringing the NHS in line with the demands of the 21st century – from analogue to digital – while getting patients seen more quickly and more conveniently.
