Black Monday Arrives as NFL Coaching Carousel Spins

The 2025 regular season is officially in the books, and for a few teams the focus has already shifted to the future.

Which means hard decisions, pink slips, and the early stages of another league-wide reset in this year’s NFL Coaching Carousel.

As usual, the end of the season triggered a wave of head coach and front office changes across the NFL. Some moves were expected. Others landed with a thud. Here’s where things stand as the league’s coaching and GM carousel begins to turn.

NFL Coaching Carousel: Head Coach Firings

    Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals dismissed head coach Jonathan Gannon on January 5, ending a tenure that never gained traction amid continued instability on both sides of the ball. Gannon went 15-36 during his three seasons in Arizona and 3-14 this season.

    Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta cleaned house on January 4, firing head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot. The Falcons finished 8-9 in both of Morris’s seasons as head coach and did not make the playoffs during Fontenot’s five-year tenure as GM.

The Falcons have already requested interviews with Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, signaling openness to both offensive and defensive leadership profiles.

    Cleveland Browns

Cleveland fired head coach Kevin Stefanski on January 5, a surprising move given recent playoff appearances, but one that reflects mounting pressure to break through in the AFC. The Browns finished 5-12 this season.

    Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders parted ways with head coach Pete Carroll on January 5, closing a short-lived chapter and reopening long-term questions about organizational direction. The Raiders own the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft thanks to a 3-14 season under Carroll.

    Miami Dolphins

Miami began its reset earlier than most, firing general manager Chris Grier on October 31. The Dolphins have aggressively cast a wide net, requesting interviews with Tariq Ahmad (49ers VP of player personnel), Alec Halaby (Eagles assistant GM), John McKay (Rams assistant GM), Jon-Eric Sullivan (Packers VP of player personnel), Josh Williams (49ers director of scouting and football operations), and RJ Gillen (49ers assistant GM). Miami has hired former NFL quarterback Troy Aikman to assist in its search for a new GM.

    New York Giants

The Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll on November 10, giving the organization an unusually long runway to begin its search as it tries to stabilize after another lost season. New York also fired defensive coordinator Shane Bowen in November.

Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka took over as interim head coach after a 2-8 start that led to Daboll’s dismissal. Daboll finished his tenure in New York with a 20-30-1 record in three-plus seasons. Reports this week indicate GM Joe Schoen will keep his job and lead the search for the Giants’ next head coach.

    Tennessee Titans

Tennessee parted ways with head coach Brian Callahan on October 13. Since then, the Titans have scheduled interviews with Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, and Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo — a clear sign they’re exploring every philosophical approach.

    What It Means

This cycle already shows familiar themes: patience running thin, organizations prioritizing quarterback development, and teams increasingly open to candidates from outside traditional coaching pipelines. Several franchises — notably Atlanta, Miami, and Tennessee — appear committed to exhaustive, multi-lane searches rather than rushing into the first big-name.

With teams now officially allowed to conduct interviews and more firings potentially still coming, this is only the opening act. The carousel is spinning, and by the time the Super Bowl arrives, the league’s sideline and front-office landscape could look dramatically different.
