British freestyler Sophie Benn has committed to joining the women’s team at Louisiana State University for the fall of 2026.

Benn hails from Tavistock, Great Britain, and represents Mount Kelly Swimming. Benn recently competed at the GoCardless SE National Winter Champs in early December. There, she notched five best short-course times across five freestyle distances. She swam her fastest times in the 50 (25.79), 100 (54.67), 200 (1:56.55), 400 (4:05.70), and 800 (8:29.81) freestyles.

In July, Benn competed at the Aquatics GB Next Gen Championships, where she turned in four of her fastest long-course performances of her career. Benn notched three freestyle bests: in the 100 free (56.17), 200 free (2:00.99), and 400 free (4:15.65). She also added a 200 IM best time in 2:23.01.
Benn is not the first Mount Kelly swimmer to join the Tigers’ women’s program; Megan Barnes, a current senior at LSU, swam at Mount Kelley School. The Tigers are no strangers to international recruits in their women’s program; the 2025-2026 roster currently contains 15 international swimmers.

Based on Benn’s best converted times, she would have been projected to qualify for the ‘B’ final in the 200 free (12th) and 500 free (14th), and finished 30th in the 100 free.
Though her comparable times are conversions, she still boasts competitive times within the SEC.
The majority of her top performances have come in the last month, showing positive progression ahead of her collegiate debut.
Looking at her times compared to the 25-26 roster, Benn would hold the fastest 500 free time, 2nd fastest 200 free time, and 5th fastest 100 free time on the roster this season.
Barnes currently tops the LSU season-best times in the 200 free (1:44.39) and 500 free (4:41.50), with NCAA Championship-qualifying times in both.
Benn’s converted 200 free time would have finished 26th at NCAAs last season, just over seven tenths outside of the ‘B’ final.
Benn joins the Tigers’ 2026 recruiting class with Lucijana Lukšić, Dara Duffy, Ieva Visockaite, and Ava Ward.
