The US news website Axios reported on Sunday, January 4, 2026, that senior Syrian and Israeli officials will meet in Paris on Monday.
Axios cited an Israeli official and another source familiar with the matter as saying the meeting will address resuming negotiations over the security agreement between the two sides.
It said the meeting comes amid US mediation and pressure aimed at reaching an agreement that would help stabilize the security situation along the Syria-Israel border.
Axios noted that the Paris meeting could be a first step toward potential diplomatic normalization between the two sides in the future.
Israeli media outlets reported that Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani will head the Syrian delegation, in the presence of the US Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack.
They added that the Israeli delegation will be led by Tel Aviv’s ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, instead of Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, alongside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s military adviser.
Leaks about the meeting came just days after US President Donald Trump said Syria and Israel would reach an agreement, expressing readiness to do his utmost to achieve it.
During a press conference with Netanyahu on 29 December 2025, Trump said he was confident the Syrian and Israeli leaders would reach an agreement, according to Reuters. He added that he had reached an “understanding” with Netanyahu regarding Syria, without specifying what that understanding entailed.
For his part, Netanyahu said Israel is keen to ensure peaceful borders with Syria, noting that it is “in Israel’s interest to establish these peaceful borders,” as he put it.
US-Israeli understandings
Israel and the United States have reached understandings related to Israel’s continued desire to operate in Syria against threats, as well as continuing negotiations with Damascus on a potential security agreement, according to the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation.
These understandings came after Netanyahu met with Thomas Barrack on 15 December 2025.
A source told the broadcaster that each side now understands what is required of it, noting that the meeting discussed defining red lines for Israeli activity in the Syrian arena, points Barrack was expected to present during the meeting.
The broadcaster said Barrack’s visit to Israel carried direct messages from Trump to Netanyahu, and focused primarily on the Syria file.
It added that the US administration views Syria’s transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa as a partner seeking to stabilize his country and push it toward progress, which is driving Washington to try to avoid steps it considers threatening to the continuity of his rule.
Barrack said he believes Syrians and Israelis will reach an agreement, starting with security and borders, then moving forward toward normalization.
In remarks to The National on 5 December 2025, Barrack said Syrians know that part of the solution lies in reaching an agreement with Israel.
Despite the presence of many hostile fighters trying to obstruct that, in Barrack’s words, he said Damascus is working hard to achieve peace.
He said the Syrian government is on the right track and is doing everything the US administration asks of it regarding Israel, adding that Syria’s stance has been fully cooperative with the US government.
He also said Israel wants to make peace with Syrians, adding that its lack of trust in the US administration makes it cautious on this file, which has slowed progress so far.
