Blackhawks 3, Golden Knights 2 (OT) — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks got off to a very slow start. And, fittingly, a week before the organization celebrates its Dynasty Era, it was Brandon Saad scoring the first goal of the game — except he did it for Vegas. The Blackhawks answered to tie the game later, but their goaltender kept them in a game that felt very one-sided for most of the period.

It took Vegas only 43 seconds to grab the lead again to start the second period. After that, it felt like the two teams were largely… skating around with the puck but not doing a whole lot. The Blackhawks out-shot Vegas 8-5 in the second period, but the Golden Knights had a 5-2 advantage in high danger chances at 5-on-5 in the period (11-4 total in the game thru 40 minutes).

The third period happened. Hockey took place. The Blackhawks did not allow a shot on net for more than half of the period. they had a couple great chances but couldn’t finish. That is until the man of the night scored his second of the game to tie the game with 8:24 left in regulation. The Hawks out-shot Vegas 7-2 in the third period, but a game-winner didn’t come for either side. So… we needed overtime to decide another Blackhawks game.

    Star 1: Tyler Bertuzzi

The Blackhawks were flat until Bertuzzi ripped home this shot for his 20th goal of the season in the first period. A little more than five minutes into a third period that was curing insomnia, Bertuzzi found Ryan Greene on the doorstep with a great pass but Greene was denied a game-tying goal. Greene returned the favor for the game-tying goal in the middle of the third period for Bertuzzi’s 21st of the year. His 22nd of the year completed a hat trick in overtime and won the game!

    Star 2: Arvid Söderblom

Söderblom appeared in his 100th career NHL game on Sunday evening, and he played well enough that his teammates had a shot in the third period. He only stopped 13 of 15 in regulation, but he made some really big saves when needed.

    Star 3: Jason Dickinson

The first time I noticed Mitch Marner in the game was when he went down after a collision late in the third period. So I checked to see who was checking him in the game that he was a complete ghost. The answer: Dickinson, against whom Marner skated almost seven minutes at 5-on-5 and the Blackhawks had a 2-0 shot on net advantage. Dickinson and his line was terrific defensively tonight.

    Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks won 14 of 33 faceoffs (42 percent) thru two periods. Dickinson won 6 of 10 overall. However, the fact that he had won 5 of 6 draws in the offensive zone thru two periods while his teammates combined to win 1 of 8 got my attention. Hard to sustain offensive zone time if you can’t win a draw. With his assist on both of Bertuzzi’s goals, André Burakovsky now has five assists in three games this calendar year. He had four assists in 14 games in the month of December. On his 23rd birthday, Dach had a good, active night. At 5-on-5 by the end of the second period, Dach led the Blackhawks in individual shot attempts (6), individual scoring chances (4 — no other Blackhawk had more than 2) and individual high dangers chances (he was credited with all three of the Blackhawks’ iHDCF). And he did all of that in only 8:30 of even-strength ice time. Nick Lardis had more hits (2) than shots on net (1) at the end of the second period. He was part of a power play unit that decided to play hot potato instead of just getting the puck on net in the second period. The Blackhawks had a 56-39 shot attempt advantage thru 60 minutes. They had a 7-2 advantage in high danger scoring chances in the third period. A much better game in the second half of a back-to-back. Early in the second period, Ilya Mikheyev got hit by a shot and… I’ll just say an angel got its wings. He was able to return to the game, thankfully.
