Caleb Williams and the offense, flat and plagued by drops for most of the day, did what they do every week—give the Chicago Bears a chance to win a football game. Williams and the offense erased a 16-point deficit on back-to-back fourth-quarter drives, but the Lions had the last laugh today with a game-winning Jake Bates field goal, splitting the uprights as time expired.
Bears Instant Grades
Offense
QB Caleb Williams | B-
Williams broke the Bears’ single-season passing record on the first of his two touchdowns. He finished the day 20-of-33 for 212 yards and 2 scores, and finished the season with 3,942 passing yards, just 58 yards shy of becoming the first 4,000-yard passer. The offensive line wasn’t great, and there were at least five drops on the afternoon, which left the offense stagnant for three-plus quarters today, but that’s a group issue, not a Williams issue.
RB Kyle Monangai & D’Andre Swift | C
D’Andre Swift carried the ball 10 times for 40 yards (4.0) and set a new personal best single-season rushing mark, while Kyle Monangai ran for only 14 yards on six carries (2.3). It was a down day for Chicago’s rushing attack, which has been one of the best in the league this season, but some of that feels like it’s on the o-line having an off day. The tape will tell.

One catch for 11 yards on three targets today for Moore.
WR Luther Burden III | B
The rookie wideout ended his season with three more catches for 35 yards and a 10-yard rushing attempt. When involved, he did his thing. Why he was absent from the gameplan in the first half is something I would like to know.
TE Cole Kmet | B
Kmet continues to be reliable when called upon, despite being less involved in the passing game, as Colston Loveland continues to establish himself as one of the favorite targets of Caleb Williams.
TE Colston Loveland | A+
Colston Loveland’s rookie season has been nothing short of incredible, and today’s performance was the exclamation point.
Offensive Line | C-
A very mediocre performance for the big guys up front today.
Defense
Defensive Line | D-
At this point, you give the Raiders whatever they want for Maxx Crosby, right?
Linebackers | D-
Nothing to write home about here. Detroit’s rushing attack did pretty much whatever it wanted today, with Gibbs and Montgomery over four yards per carry.

Jared Goff was playing Madden on easy mode against the Chicago secondary today. Nahshon Wright has been a tremendous story this season, but he was picked on today, and that’s going to be an issue in the playoffs. But of course, they got that signature takeaway despite all of that.
Special Teams
K Cairo Santos | NA
Santos had zero field goal or extra point attempts today.
P Tory Taylor | B
A good day at the office for Taylor, who banged a 54-yard punt and averaged 44 yards on his punts.
Bears Coaching
Ben Johnson | C+
I didn’t love the gameplan in the first half. It was stagnant, and Luther Burden III wasn’t involved nearly enough.
David Banks-Imagn ImagesDennis Allen | D
Why Allen stayed in man coverage most of the day despite being absolutely shredded is beyond me, and it’s something that’s going to need to be corrected this week. The personnel is what it is, but the scheme can’t be bad, and stay the same all day.
