One week after leaving the team facility after a disagreement stemming from the team’s decision to shut down him for the team’s Week 17 game against the New York Giants, Maxx Crosby could be on the move this offseason. In her Week 18 notebook, The Athletic’s NFL insider, Dianna Russini, reports the belief around the league that the Raiders “would be open” to trading Crosby in the offseason.

Maxx Crosby’s Raiders future is also being questioned around the league. Las Vegas shut down its five-time Pro Bowler last week against his wishes, and the relationship between the sides remains strained. It’s a dramatic shift from just two months ago, when Crosby and Davis nixed any trade discussions ahead of the Nov. 4 deadline. Many believe Las Vegas will be open to moving its star pass rusher if the relationship remains at an impasse, allowing Crosby, who will turn 29 this summer, an opportunity to compete on a team built to win now.

What a bombshell to drop on the final weekend of the season. We should note the framing here, particularly with the anecdotes about the “dramatic shift” from when Crosby and the Raiders dismissing trade talks and the nugget about allowing Crosby to seek a trade to a team that is in a contention window. It is too early to get deep in the weeds on this, but this is good stuff to keep in mind whenever we flip the calendar to the offseason.

I don’t need to get too flowery with my wording in this post, so I won’t. The Chicago Bears should be kicking the tires on a Maxx Crosby trade should the Raiders fail to repair the strained relationship with their star pass rusher. This front office should be willing to cook up a creative deal to land a difference-maker on defense. To me, that means an openness to trade a combination of picks and players from the decision-makers at Halas Hall. It also means Chicago’s cap wizards will need to get in the trenches.
OverTheCap.com has the Bears being $196,440 over the projected 2026 NFL salary cap. Things are tight for Chicago’s football team right now, but it shouldn’t take much to create space. And while moving enough things around to create enough room to fit the player’s mega-deal snugly under the cap isn’t my forte, the powers that be at Halas Hall should have enough cap nerds to find a way to make space for a player of Maxx Crosby’s caliber.

But with that being said, we have a while before we can cross that bridge. For all we know, the Raiders can bend the knee to Maxx Crosby and do whatever it takes to keep him in the fold. I think Crosby could be traded this offseason. And yet, it isn’t a sure thing — and that is something we need to keep in mind when having discussions about such things. Just because the door is open for a Maxx Crosby trade doesn’t mean he will walk through said door.
Hence, I’m not going about my business with the idea of building a defense around Crosby after Bears GM Ryan Poles swings a huge trade. However, let whatever Maxx Crosby trade rumors that surface this offseason serve as a reminder that upgrading the pass rush will be the top offseason priority. Whether it is a Crosby trade, a draft pick, a free-agent signing, or another move that we don’t have on our scopes right now, we know what needs to be done — and so does this front office.
