Temperatures in England and Wales dropped to their lowest level this winter on Saturday night as amber weather warnings are issued for parts of the UK.
Temperatures to -9.3°C in England and –7.3°C in Wales. overnight as snow hit parts of the country, forecasters said.
In Scotland, temperatures also plummeted, reaching –8.5°C in some areas.
The extreme cold is set to continue until at least Tuesday, as yellow and new amber weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued across the UK.
Parts of Scotland will now remain under amber weather warnings until Monday, after these warnings expired yesterday, indicating further challenges, with many schools set to reopen tomorrow.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “Heavy snow showers will become more frequent and may merge to give longer spells of snow at times.
“The areas and period covered by this warning are when the heaviest and most disruptive snow is thought most likely during the current cold spell, with existing yellow warnings covering a wider area and a longer period.”
Most areas of the UK are expected to experience some snow, but parts of Scotland will be worst affected with 20-30cm predicted to fall overnight in some regions.
The weather warnings state there could be severe travel disruption and power cuts.

Yesterday, the greatest snowfall was recorded in the Scottish Highlands with the small village of Tomintoul experiencing 37cm, according to the Met Office, as of Saturday lunchtime.
Separate yellow warnings for snow and ice are in place for Wales, Greater Manchester and south-west England – while much of the east coast of England is covered by a yellow warning for ice.
This means that some transport delays are expected on roads and railways and there are likely to be some slips and falls due to untreated icy surfaces.
Some transport chaos has already erupted with over 150 flights from the UK to Amsterdam cancelled due to wintery conditions at Schiphol airport.

In attempts to tackle road challenges, 32 gritters were sent out in Aberdeenshire this morning although areas are reportedly still “impassable”.
Roads around Wick in North Scotland have been particularly affected with A9 and A99 between Helmsdale and Wick remaining closed due to snow drifts and poor visibility.

They are advising that those in amber warning areas prepare for power cuts by gathering torches and mobile phone power banks.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has also updated all parts of England to the amber alert level until 9 January.
These warnings are designed to alert people working in health and social care, government departments and the community sector to be aware of the likely rise in demand.
