On Jan. 2, Yungblud came through on his promise to fans with a New Year's surprise. It was a rerelease of the single "Zombie" from his 2025 album Idols, including a new music video featuring the one and only Smashing Pumpkins.
At first, many fans were baffled why the 28-year-old rocker would rerelease a single instead of share something new. But now they can't get enough of what some are calling "cinematic."
"When this first dropped, I know a lot of people were upset it was reworked at all, especially around Billy Corgan’s voice, and honestly, it was jarring for me at first too," said one fan on Reddit. But after watching the video with "a real sound system," that opinion quickly changed.
"It might actually become my favorite version," they elaborated. "The video itself is visually stunning, cinematic, perfectly edited, and beautifully framed."
For this fan, it was a pleasure seeing Corgan support Yungblud, real name Dominic Harrison, in this way.
"Also, major MTV nostalgia," they concluded. "Seeing The Smashing Pumpkins on a big screen again just felt right and reminded me of why I loved and their videos so much in the '90s."
"I love it!" another fan said in a comment on the thread. "There's finally a version I enjoy enough to listen to on repeat. Not that I dislike the original. It's just hard for me to listen to the original without feeling sad somehow."
The original music video features Florence Pugh, who plays a nurse. Yungblud has described the emotional song as a tribute to his grandmother, but also healthcare workers around the world.
"The way [Harrison] got his dream of the sound in the cemetery as he first envisioned!" another fan chimed in. "It goes much deeper remembering this is about his Grandmother's lost battle with cirrhosis."
"I was in love with the guitars instantly," another Yungblud fan said. "Now that I've listened to it a lot more, the more I love it. The nostalgia helps. Brings me back to a simpler time."
Still, not everyone is loving Yungblud's latest collaboration. Others prefer what the Doncaster native did with One More Time, his EP with Aerosmith.
Overall, though, fans agree about one thing. "We need an Alternative revival!"
