49ers report card: Trouble not limited to offense in sobering loss to Seahawks

SANTA CLARA – Here is how the 49ers (12-5) graded in Saturday night’s regular season-ending 13-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks (14-3) at Levi’s Stadium:

PASS OFFENSE: D-

Brock Purdy got battered, to the tune of a season-high three sacks and eight hits, the final of which resulted in a left-shoulder stinger and surely more pain to his back. He passed for a season-low 127 yards against a defense that allowed only one pass of 20 yards, to George Kittle, who had just 9 yards on four earlier catches combined. The 49ers’ comeback essentially died when a Purdy pass was tipped and went off Christian McCaffrey’s hands for a fourth-quarter interception at the 3-yard line. Left tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall didn’t play but that wouldn’t have made the difference. And Jauan Jennings didn’t score for the first time in six games but played through a left-shoulder issue (four catches, 35 yards).

    RUN OFFENSE: F

McCaffrey ran for a season-low 23 yards on eight carries, leaving him with 1,202 yards that rank sixth in the NFL and a 3.9 yards-per-carry average that was his lowest since his 2017 rookie year (3.7 yards per carry). He came within 76 receiving yards of 1,000, adding 34 Saturday on a team-high six catches. Purdy had their longest runs, on 10- and 11-yard scrambles.

    PASS DEFENSE: D

Sam Darnold got sacked twice and fumbled once but still committed no turnovers and didn’t ruin Seattle’s chances. He completed 20-of-26 passes for 198 yards. Deommodore Lenoir committed pass interference in the end zone on Jaxon Smith-Njigba on the opening drive, and although it didn’t cost the 49ers any points, the 49ers did let him rack up 84 yards to raise his NFL-leading total to 1,793 yards. Tatum Bethune and Sam Okuayinonu each had a sack, raising the 49ers’ season total to an NFL-worst 20.

    RUN DEFENSE: F

Way too many missed tackles, and no play was more appalling than Kenneth Walker’s 19-yard run on a third-and-17 conversion late in the third quarter to set up the Seahawks’ final points. Linebackers Tatum Bethune (groin) and Dee Winters (ankle) were playing subpar before exiting with injuries that could shelve them for the wild-card round. Allowing 180 rushing yards (39 carries) in a winner-take-the-top-seed game was a complete failure.

    SPECIAL TEAMS: D+

Eddy Piñeiro’s 48-yard field goal provided the 49ers’ only points, earning a shoutout from Kittle. Garrett Wallow’s facemask penalty on punt coverage helped set up the Seahawks’ only touchdown drive, covering just 35 yards. Robinson muffed the second-half kickoff to pin the 49ers at their 12.

    COACHING: F

Billed as the biggest regular-season game in Levi’s Stadium’s 12-year history, the 49ers nearly produced the first shutout in Kyle Shanahan’s nine seasons, and instead they matched their lowest scoring output since a 23-3 loss in his 2017 debut against Carolina. Robert Saleh’s defensive unit flashed at times, but nowhere near enough to mask missed tackles and an eighth game without a takeaway (13th without an interception).
