The Mustafizur Rahman drama is slowly getting out of hand. It started with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructing the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release the Bangladesh pacer. Now, the Bangladesh government has got involved and is deliberating over banning the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 coverage in the nation.
Bangladesh is looking to ban IPL 2026 coverage
Bangladesh’s Adviser for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Asif Nazrul took to Facebook, requesting Bangladesh’s Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry to halt all coverage of the Indian cash-rich league after the BCCI decided to virtually ban Mustafizur.
“I have requested the adviser for Information and Broadcasting to ensure that the broadcast of the IPL in Bangladesh is also suspended. Under no circumstances will we tolerate any insult to Bangladeshi cricket, cricketers, or Bangladesh itself. The days of servitude are over,” he wrote.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) also agrees with this sentiment. However, BCB President Aminul Islam hasn’t made an official comment regarding the matter. In fact, the BCB is yet to receive an official communication from the BCCI regarding the matter.
Earlier today, during the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the Secretariat Media Centre, Bangladesh’s I&B Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan was asked about Nazrul’s urge to halt all coverage of IPL 2026 in Bangladesh.
“Unfortunately, politics has been brought into the game,” Rizwana said while addressing the situation. She went on to state that sports can aid in reducing tensions between nations, but the opposite has happened in India and Bangladesh.
“We also need to take a position in this situation,” she said while informing that Bangladesh’s government is reviewing what they can do on a legal basis before taking any step.
Meanwhile, BCB are also requesting a change of venues for the T20 World Cup 2026, citing security concerns. Bangladesh are slated to play 3 group stage matches in Kolkata.
