Amazon selected a Chicago suburb for a new proposed retail development, the municipality’s mayor announced Saturday.
The 35-acre site where Amazon hopes to build the retail development is located at the southwest corner of 159th Street and LaGrange Road in Orland Park. The development will take over the site formerly occupied by Petey’s II restaurant.
The new proposal is on the agenda for an upcoming Plan Commission meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday.
“When a global retailer of this scale is considering investment in Orland Park, it sends a strong signal about the vitality of our community and the strategic importance of this corridor,” said Orland Park Mayor Jim Dodge. “It demonstrates that Orland Park continues to be viewed as a premier destination for major commercial investment.”
According to the project narrative included in Amazon’s special use permit application, the one-story, 225,000 square-foot commercial retail building will be surrounded by 837 parking spaces and seven loading docks.
The retail store will offer a “wide selection of products, including groceries and general merchandise, with accessory services and potentially dining locations for prepared food sold on-site,” according to the project narrative submitted by Amazon. Online shoppers will also have the ability to pick up their orders at the new development.
The landscaping plan for the project will “enhance the site’s aesthetic appeal and functionality,” according to the project narrative.
“This is a prime location, and we are encouraged to see it being considered for full commercial redevelopment,” said Jim Dodge. “Projects like this have the potential to generate substantial sales tax revenue that directly benefits residents while strengthening one of our most important corridors.”
Officials emphasized the significant tax revenue the proposed development could generate for Orland Park is a key benefit of the project, harboring the potential to provide long-term financial support for municipal services and capital improvements, according to a release from the Village of Orland Park.
The proposal is subject to public review and approval.
Any future consideration by the Village Board after Tuesday’s Plan Commission meeting would take place at a publicly noticed meeting, according to the Village of Orland Park.
