Over the course of a gruelling Premier League season, there will be many tests of any team with aspirations of challenging for the title. This won’t be the biggest of those faced by Arsenal this term, but it was a very, very significant one, and one that they ultimately overcame to move six points clear at the top of the table.
It wasn’t smooth sailing at all, and they weren’t at their best in any part of the pitch. All that matters for their campaign, however, is the fact that they got the win.
They were uncharacteristically lacking in composure and control in defence from the early stages of this match. There were a few moments of confusion at the back that almost led to openings for the hosts from the first minute. And on 10 minutes, the usually so reliable Gabriel Magalhães gifted Bournemouth the opening goal with a pass played straight to Evanilson, who gratefully passed into an empty net to score only his third Premier League goal of the season.
The goal was only the third time since the start of 2024 that Arsenal have conceded in the opening 10 minutes of a Premier League game, and the previous two were both scored by Erling Haaland for Manchester City (September 2024 and September 2025, both after nine minutes).
Having won only one of the six previous games this season in which they had conceded the first goal – the last-gasp 2-1 win at Newcastle in September – there may have been some concern that this tricky away assignment would lead to crucial dropped points in the title race. After all, their record shows that they can struggle to break down opponents who are protecting a lead.
But against a team that struggles more than most in the Premier League when it comes to defending set-pieces, Arsenal didn’t have to wait long for an equaliser, and nor did Gabriel have to wait long to atone for his error. Following some fine work from Noni Madueke after a free-kick, the Brazilian finished impressively to level the scores. In doing so, he became the first Arsenal player to both score a goal and make an error leading to an opposition goal in a Premier League game since Bukayo Saka in August 2023 (vs Fulham).
However, Bournemouth continued to carry an attacking threat, and they had some decent chances while Arsenal created little more in the first half.
In fact, the visitors didn’t have a single shot between the 18th and the 54th minutes, but crucially, they kept their opponents out, and even more importantly, they were clinical when they did eventually get more chances.
Viktor Gyökeres battled hard chasing a ball that Gabriel Martinelli had flicked on, and the ball eventually fell to the in-form Martin Ødegaard, who showed fantastic awareness to lay the ball off for the onrushing Declan Rice, who finished low and hard into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the box. Since the start of 2025, Phil Foden (five) is the only Premier League player with more goals in all competitions from outside the box than Rice (four).
They then had to wait another 17 minutes for another shot, but again it brought a goal. Substitute Bukayo Saka burst onto a pass into the box from Ødegaard, and cut the ball back for Rice to finish from close range. In his 296th Premier League appearance, Rice had his first ever brace in the competition.
The goal also meant that Arsenal had had only four shots over 61 minutes after Bournemouth had taken an early lead. However, they scored with three of those shots to take a 3-1 lead.
That wasn’t quite to be the end of the entertainment, though. Just five minutes later, the impressive Junior Kroupi fired in an unstoppable effort from the edge of the box. The goal made him the top-scoring teenager for a Premier League club this season in all competitions (six goals), moving ahead of Chelsea’s Estêvão (five).
They could not find an equaliser in the final quarter of an hour, and Arsenal held on to an important and hard-fought win. They have won 15 of their 20 Premier League games this season, only ever winning more of their first 20 in 2022-23 and 1932-33 (both W16 D2 L2).
They won the title in the first of those seasons, but failed to three years ago. They will hope this time things will be different.
