BBC drama Waiting for the Out adapts the memoir by Andy West, The Life Inside, which charts West's experiences teaching philosophy to prisoners, while also grappling with his own family history, as three of the men closest to him had also spent time locked up.
As with many book adaptations, there series covers a lot of the ground from the written text, although some fairly substantial changes have been made, with the lead character being called Dan rather than Andy, to further denote the differences between the two.
However, just because much of the book has already been adapted, that doesn't mean a season 2 wouldn't be possible - something writer Dennis Kelly expanded on when speaking with RadioTimes.com and other press.
When asked whether there was potential for the drama to continue on in a second season, Kelly said: "The truth is, I talked, literally yesterday, to an executive producer and asked the same question."
Kelly continued: "Because when we conceived it, we were talking about the next series, and we've been so focused on getting this down that no one's actually put their head up. But I'd love to do it. I'd love to do it again.
"I mean, if people like it, if there's an appetite for it, if Andy wants to again, if Josh wants to do it again, I'd love to. Because I really liked being with those characters. And the actors were amazing. I got fond of everyone that was doing it, but mostly I think I love those characters. I feel like I could write tons for them."
When asked whether he would have to come up with new storylines for Josh Finan's Dan, and whether the stories in West's memoir had now been exhausted, Kelly said that "there's a lot more philosophical stuff" in the book, but that "Andy’s story, I think we've probably exhausted."
"It's not that we couldn't find more or talk to Andy about more," he continued. "It's a difficult question, because we’d have to collaborate on what that next thing would be, because there isn’t something you can just pull out and go, 'It’s that'. But the other side of that is, there’s loads of prison scenes in that book that we haven't even touched on, there's a ton of them."
