The health admission that will now plague Trump’s presidency

There is no problem in the world that Donald Trump thinks he can’t solve himself. So when he heard The Wall Street Journal was preparing an article on his health, he decided to address the matter head on in what the publication described as an “impromptu phone interview”.

“Let’s talk about health again for the 25th time,” he told the Journal irritatedly. “My health is perfect.” Glad that settles matters – in the same way that he has “settled” eight wars in his first year as President and pronounced it’s “time to end” the Jeffrey Epstein “hoax”.

Trump can’t just snap his fingers and declare what the American public can see or not see for themselves. Even his Maga supporters aren’t that credulous anymore. In what is fast becoming a pattern, the President’s attempt to bury bad news has only raised more questions than answers.

In the interview, Trump revealed that he takes far more blood-thinning aspirin than his doctors recommend, leading to bruising. In fact his skin is so thin (now there’s a surprise) that Pam Bondi, the attorney general, caused his hand to bleed by nicking it with her ring. “Yes, there was a slight little cut,” Trump admitted.

He applies make-up concealer to his hand in “ten seconds” whenever he gets “whacked again by someone” but keeps taking a large daily dose of 325mg of aspirin a day, according to his doctor, Sean Barbarella, for “cardiac prevention”.

“They say aspirin is good for thinning out the blood, and I don’t want thick blood pouring through my heart,” Trump said. “I want nice, thin blood pouring through my heart. Does that make sense?”

Of course, he thinks he knows better than medical professionals. (Please remember this when assessing the accuracy of his guidance on the alleged links between vaccines, paracetamol and autism.)

In other news, Trump said he had a CT scan not an MRI, as he previously claimed, and harrumphed that he should never have owned up to taking one anyway because it gives opponents “a little ammunition”. He doesn’t fall asleep in meetings – far from it – he just finds it “very relaxing” to close his eyes, but it’s also the fault of photographers for snapping him blinking (as if no video evidence existed).

He also tried compression socks to reduce the swelling in his ankles but “didn’t like them” and now tries to get up and walk around more, which helps. But he thinks exercise is “boring” and only plays golf (which, to my untutored eye, would appear to involve a lot of trundling around in a cart).

All this is by Trump’s own telling but the article also references anonymous “aides, donors and friends” who revealed they have to speak loudly in meetings because “he strains to hear” and are shocked by the amount of fatty, salty food he consumes (lots of hamburgers and fries).

To those who read the media tea leaves, one sentence summing up his predicament stands out: “Trump, 79, the oldest man to assume the presidency, is showing signs of ageing in public and private, according to people close to him.”

This doesn’t sound like a particularly big deal. Indeed Trump admirers could easily dismiss this as a rather vague, unattributed, fake claim by an unfriendly publication. In short, it’s nothing but a “health hoax”, to join all those other so-called “hoaxes” that keep dogging Trump’s presidency.

But the first name in the Journal’s reporting team is Annie Linskey, who thrilled the Trump campaign at the height of the presidential election campaign by publishing a story in June 2024 headlined, “Behind Closed Doors, Biden Shows Signs of Slipping”.

This was roundly condemned as a “hit piece” by Joe Biden’s allies. But three weeks later, Biden’s candidacy imploded when it was obvious he couldn’t string a sentence together in debate with Trump. It’s difficult for Maga to claim Linskey can be trusted to reveal the truth about the former president but not about the current one.

In fairness to Trump, he has more energy than Biden, which he ascribes to “good genetics”. His schedule, shared with the Journal, reveals him to have held “hundreds” of meetings and phone calls with aides, cabinet members, politicians and business executives in the first three weeks of December.

The President’s day begins in his private quarters at the White House and he apparently works from 10am to 7pm or 8pm in the Oval Office (when he’s not at Mar-a-Lago). There is no doubt that, whatever his physical fitness, everything revolves around pleasing him or anticipating his wishes.

But try as he might to change the narrative about his health, this truth is self-evident: Trump is getting older and there is nothing he can do about it.
