A family is seeking answers after their beloved pet was lost at a dog daycare and boarding facility in suburban Broadview.
Maryann Cross said she boarded her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Stella at Bark BLVD in Broadview last weekend. But in the following days, she received a call that Stella had escaped.
Cross said the boarding facility told her Stella climbed up on a chair and equipment, vaulted over a six-foot fence then dropped to a concrete pad six feet below and ran away through the cemetery behind the facility.
But Cross said she doubts whether that is the case.
“She’s a tiny 16lb Cavalier King Charles Spaniel,” the pet owner stated. “There is no way that she was able to do this.”
Cross received a copy of an email her brother received from the facility after he reached out. It can be read below:
“We are deeply saddened by this situation and understand how painful and distressing this is for you. We want to be very clear and truthful about what occurred and what actions we took.
From the moment Stella got out of our yard, we immediately began active search efforts. We remained on-site at our facility for approximately 30–35 hours continuously, searching the building and surrounding areas, monitoring entrances, and waiting in the event that Stella returned. We left food and familiar scents outside in an effort to encourage a safe return.
In addition to remaining on-site, we drove the are for the remainder of the day, contacted local shelters, veterinary offices, and appropriate authorities, and continued outreach efforts as part of the search. At no point was this situation ignored or treated lightly. We care deeply about every dog entrusted to us, and we took this responsibility seriously.
We understand how upsetting this is, and we recognize that no explanation can ease that pain. While we cannot speculate or provide answers beyond what we know to be true, we want you to know that efforts were made immediately and in good faith.
Sincerely,Patrick Baier”
Cross told NBC Chicago she filed a police report with the Broadview Police Department and a complaint with the Illinois Dept of Agriculture, the agency that licenses animal kennels.
