A Kentucky woman is facing criminal charges after state police said she allegedly aborted her pregnancy at home, then buried the body of a “developed male infant” in a “shallow grave.”
While visiting a medical clinic in Campton on Wednesday, December 31, the woman, Melinda S. Spencer, shared that she had an abortion at her home, according to a news release Kentucky State Police provided to Us Weekly.
Staff at the facility, United Clinics Of Kentucky, called state police, leading to an investigation, authorities said.
When detectives interviewed Spencer, 35, at the clinic, she said “she had ordered medication online to complete an abortion” and “took the medication which resulted in the death of a developed male infant,” state police said.
Spencer then told police she buried the infant’s body “on the backside of her property” in Campton, located in Wolfe County, about a 70-mile drive southeast from Lexington, according to authorities.
Troopers and detectives ultimately located the infant’s remains in what was said to be a shallow grave at her home.

According to court documents reviewed by WDKY, Spencer took the abortion medication on December 26, then had the at-home abortion on Saturday, December 27. She is accused of burying the infant’s remains on Sunday, December 28.
WKDY reported the remains were contained inside a white grocery sack, according to court filings.
“According to an arrest citation, inside was a light bulb box wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper,” the outlet also reported. “The fetus’s remains were reportedly wrapped in a white rag.”
Investigators said that during a “more in-depth interview,” Spencer is accused of sharing that she sought to end her pregnancy because she did not want her significant other to know that she allegedly became impregnated by someone else, according to WKDY.
Spencer was arrested on charges of first-degree fetal homicide, abuse of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence, according to state police. She is detained at the Three Forks Regional Jail in Beattyville.
Information on whether Spencer has retained legal counsel was not immediately available.
An autopsy of the infant’s remains will determine its “gestational age,” WKYT News reported.
State police said the agency is continuing to investigate.

Kentucky is one of the “most restrictive” states when it comes to abortion, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research and policy organization focused on sexual and reproductive health.
The state has a total abortion ban “with very limited exceptions,” the institute reports.
