State and Lake CTA station closes Monday for major 3-year overhaul

CTA commuters in the Loop will encounter a major disruption beginning Monday: the popular State and Lake station will shut down for major construction over the next three years.

Riders who rely on the busy stop to get around will need to find an alternate route for a while.

The 130-year-old station is expected to be converted into a glistening new gateway to State Street.

Some commuters, who were caught off guard by the plans, shared their thoughts with NBC Chicago in December.

“What, this? Right here? They are going to rebuild the whole thing,” Janita Colline, a Green Line rider told NBC Chicago earlier this month. “Maybe they could do better with rebuilding, but three whole years? No…That means I go to find another route to get home in because I ride the green line.”

The station will be torn down and will be rebuilt with a more open-air design, a glass canopy and a wider platform featuring expanded sidewalks underneath. Also included will be ADA-accessible elevators on all corners and accessible connections to the Red Line subway station.

“It’s going to be really nice, but I wish it wasn’t all so quick because State Street is still closed, and I heard there are going to be more renovations west of the South Loop,” said Henry Ropella, another CTA rider. “I live here in the South Loop, and it’s going to be a little difficult to get places now.”

Until the project is complete, there will be inconveniences for pedestrians and commuters who have come to depend on the Green Line station.

“That’s crazy. It’s right outside my work, so it’s not going to be fun,” another rider stated.

The CTA said it announced the project more than a month ahead of time to minimize the impact on riders. Construction is expected to wrap up some time in 2029.

Trains will continue to run during the construction, but won’t stop at State and Lake.

Commuters are urged to use the following other stations instead:

    Washington-Wabash Clark and Lake
