Aldis Zesty $5 Freezer Find Gives Pizza Night a Flavor-Boosted Upgrade

There's an inherent voyeurism in social media that makes it easy to peek in and even participate in discourse about a range of topics you might not have firsthand knowledge of. That is to say, behind our phone screens, we're all armchair experts. Sure, you might have peripheral expertise about a city's food scene, but unless you actually live there, you probably aren't aware of the full breadth of what it's actually like. Take Chicagopizza, for example.

Most people associate the Windy City with deep-dish and deep-dish only, but Chicago native-turned-Atlanta-transplant Danny Huber of Bertolozi's Pizza in Roswell, Ga., would beg to differ. For Danny, Chicago-style pizza, according to the locals, will always and forever be tavern-style. Cracker-thin crust, the freshest ingredients possible, and the iconic square cut. It's pizza made to be enjoyed with one hand so that you can keep a firm grip on your beer in the other.

Not what you might expect from a city known the world over as being the land of the deep dish, huh? Even more, not what you might expect from the Atlanta food scene. Georgia's capital city has garnered a reputation for a somewhat predictable culinary landscape. Still, it's so much more than wobbly tables at brunch, obnoxiously loud music, and Hennessy-glazed chicken wings with red velvet waffles. Those things definitely have their place, but like people, cuisine is not a monolith.

There is one Atlanta delicacy that's impossible to separate from the home of the low-exposure filter and chicken Alfredo: lemon pepper. It's zesty, tangy, and bright, and whether you like it wet or dry, it always hits. It's great on chicken wings, delicious on shrimp, and does an excellent job of jazzing up veggies. But what if you could have the best of Chicago and Atlanta fused into one delectable dish that'll change the way you look at both cities and their culinary exports for good? Enter: Mama Cozzi's Thin Crust Lemon Pepper Chicken Bruschetta Pizza.

That's right, my fellow internet voyeurs, lemon-pepper chicken pizza. Now, I should preface my review of this tasty Aldi freezer find by saying it's definitely a frozen pizza. It won't necessarily blow your socks off like the "Joyce" at Bertolozi's. Still, when you're craving something flavorful and unexpected on a weeknight that comes together with virtually zero effort, well, in that light, this pizza might just be life-changing.

Tender chunks of white meat garlic-and-herb chicken sit on top of a zesty lemon-pepper-seasoned tomato sauce studded with fire-roasted tomatoes and fresh basil. A melty blanket of mozzarella, Asiago, Parmesan and Romano cheeses tops everything off, and the pièce de résistance is that beautiful tin crust. It's a mouthwatering excursion of flavors and textures, and when paired with the right wine, it could even be considered fine dining.

Personally, the only thing this pizza was missing was the sweetness from an onion, but that can easily be remedied by adding your own, as I did. I also added a sprinkling of my favorite non-negotiable pizza seasonings—fennel seed, garlic powder, lots of crushed red pepper flakes and oregano, obviously. After about 18 minutes, the pizza emerged from the oven perfectly bronzed and bubbly, and the rest is tasty history. Taste-wise, the pizza isn't noticeably lemon-forward, but the hit of acid adds a vibrant brightness to the sauce, making everything else stand out.

The crust is crispy and light with just enough chew to stand up to the rest of the ingredients, and for just $4.99, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better frozen pizza. Truly, it's earned the right to become a staple in my freezer for the price-to-flavor ratio alone. Of course, it can't hold a candle to an authentic tavern-style pie from Bertolozi's or the lemon pepper wings at Atlanta's Apt 4B, which substitutes chicken for turkey, but it's a great amalgamation of the two staples in any case. With that, I leave with this reminder: social media isn't real—at least not all the time.

The best way to learn everything there is to know about something is to experience it. Who knows? You might end up finding your new favorite dish.
