Stranger Things has only just ended, but already fans are avidly searching for clues about any potential spinoffs tied to the hit Netflix series.
Though it's previously been confirmed by Netflix that several spinoffs of the beloved sci-fi horror series are currently in the works, Stranger Things' creators just gave a massive update about the underlying plot behind one of these planned spinoff projects.
In a recent interview with Variety, the Duffer Brothers openly discussed at least one of the projects they have lined up to deal with any unresolved plot threads from the last season of Stranger Things.
Above all else, one thing the brothers are hoping to explore in a future spinoff is the mysterious origins of the rock seen in the finale of Stranger Things: the same rock that gives Henry Creel his powers and turns him into the series' main antagonist, Vecna.
"The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it," said the brothers.
"But it’s a completely different mythology. So it’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that," the duo continued. "It’s very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining."
As anyone who has seen the final episode is sure to know, the rock in question is initially found in the possession of a badly injured scientist who warns Henry about the Mind Flayer (the giant spider-like creature inhabiting a nightmarish reality called Dimension X).
Upon touching the rock, young Henry receives a vision of the Mind Flayer, urging the boy to "Come find me." In the real world, the scientist delivers a final ominous message to Henry about the Mind Flayer, telling the child, “It will consume you.”
Though it would initially seem like the proposed spinoff might act as a deeper origin story focusing, at least in part, on Henry Creel, the Duffers were quick to tell Variety the project will feature an entirely new cast of characters.
"We’re actually really excited, and it’s very exciting to work with a clean slate: completely new characters, new town, new world, new mythology," the brothers teased.
