Beverly Hills, 90210 star Gabrielle Carteris is opening up about the truth behind some of the on-screen choices for her character, Andrea Zuckerman. Rewatching the series years later, fans may notice that Andrea never wore a bikini or revealing outfits during summer episodes—and Carteris is now explaining why.
Appearing on her former co-star Jennie Garth's I Choose Me podcast, she revealed she was against showing off her body on screen and didn't want to be perceived in that way.
"[Executive producer] Aaron Spelling, I remember before we started the summer episodes, [saying ,] 'All right, ladies, we're going to be wearing bathing suits in the summer, so you might want to know that.' I was like, 'What does that mean?' I refused to wear a bathing suit. I don't know if you ever saw, I never wore a bathing suit," explained Carteris.
Fans of the series will recall how Carteris's co-stars wore bright colored and patterned bikinis at the beach, while she often wore shorts. Carteris opted for clothing that felt appropriate for her, and didn't give in to sexual objectification that came with the series.
"I wore shorts or I had my leotard and my shorts. I wore my overalls and my tank top, but I refused to wear [a swimsuit], because it infuriated me. I mean, I had a cute little body at the time, I think, but it enraged me that that was the conversation," she added.
Carteris says that no one "challenged" her on the set of 90210 when it came to her choices, and it led them not to write certain scenarios or storylines that she wouldn't be comfortable with.
Even before 90210 and having acted in commercials, she stood firm in not auditioning for roles that required her to wear a bikini.
