Alex Van Halen revealed that he’s getting ready to record music with a fellow rock icon. Speaking on the Metal Sticks podcast in an interview posted on January 1, the legendary Van Halen drummer confirmed that a previously teased project involving Toto frontman Steve Lukather is moving forward.
“I'm getting ready to do this record with Lukather and a couple of other people," Van Halen, 72, told Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain on the podcast. "It should be exciting."
"We have a long history together,” Van Halen added of his relationship with the Toto guitarist and singer. “He sang on a couple of records with us … We've known Lukather for a long time. He was one of the real, true best friends.”
Van Halen did not go into detail on Lukather’s role in the new project, adding, “When you're in, I don't want to use the word ‘business,’ but if you're in this line of work… it goes beyond a superficial contract and 'I want you to do this and do that.' We do it because we like something or we want to do it because it's creative. .... The moment you get into contracts that are very specific about what your role in the project is, it falls apart. That's been our experience anyway.”
Van Halen’s update comes nearly a year after he was quoted in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraf (via Guitar World) as saying that Lukather was involved in a project involving unreleased recordings left behind by his late brother Eddie Van Halen, who died in 2020 at age 65.
"Ed and Steve Lukather were very good friends and they often worked together. There is no one who can do this process with me as well as he can,” Alex Van Halen reportedly told the outlet in early 2025.
Lukather, 68, promptly shut down rumors that he would be playing guitar on a new Van Halen record.
“Ever since Alex Van Halen dropped some we were gonna work together, I think there is a huge misunderstanding,” Lukather told fans on Instagram in March 2025, per Music Radar. “I will not ever play a guitar note on a Van Halen song. Al asked me to help him go thru a ton of unfinished recordings of Al and Ed writing and recording that never saw the light of day. As of now that's all I got. The fact that ANYONE would think for even a second that I would play anything on this is ridiculous. I have too much love and respect for that and ... I play nothing like Ed… more as a co-producer or something. I am honored Al would ask me though.”
Lukather first worked with Eddie Van Halen in the 1980s. Not only did they both play on Michael Jackson’s “Beat it” track in 1983, but Eddie played on Lukather’s 1989 self-titled solo album.
Lukather has spoken of his admiration for Eddie Van Halen, telling Guitar Player he first heard the guitar legend's music at age 19 when he was working on Toto’s debut album. “We met a little while after that and became friends. I borrowed one of his amps for an Elton John session in 1979,” Lukather recalled. “He came down and we all hung out. It was fun.“
“Everyone is going to tell you that he’s the greatest guitarist ever,” Lukather added. “That’s a given. …And when you’re around it enough, you kind of hope it’ll rub off on you. But in the end, the greatest thing for me was the friendship. I knew him on a different level. He was a trusted friend. I cherish that. And I miss my friend.”
On January 26, 2025, Lukather marked what would have been Eddie Van Halen’s 70thbirthday with a throwback Instagram photo of the two of them. “Love you Ed xx,” he captioned the post.
