Shantay, You Stay! All About RuPauls Decades-Spanning Romance With Husband Georges LeBar

For the past four decades, drag iconRuPaul Charles has been one of pop culture's most indelible personalities, from his epic couture fashions to his excellently campy music career ("Covergirl, put that bass in your walk!) to his Emmy-winning streak as the creator, host and head judge of the long-running reality competition RuPaul's Drag Race. And there will be even more where that comes from when Drag Race returns for its eighteenth season this Friday, January 2 at 8 p.m. ET on MTV, with a brand-new cast of queens entering the Werk Room and our drag-loving hearts — including, for the first time ever, a mother-daughter duo competing together.

And while season 18 will officially be a family affair — speaking of, the whole gang will be back at the judges' table, with Ru joined by returning mainstays Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley, Ross Mathews, and Ts Madison — it has us wondering about RuPaul's real-life family and who he spends time with when the lip syncs are over and the wigs are put away. We're especially curious about Charles' longtime love Georges LeBar, to whom the star has been married for nearly a decade and partnered way longer than that.

“If you’re devoted to a person, nothing’s gonna change that. And after 23 years, you know, hey, I know him. He knows me. I love him," Charles told Entertainment Tonight in 2017. "He’s my favorite person on the planet I’ve met. I’ve met a lot of people... He’s my favorite person.”

Ahead of the Drag Race season 18 premiere, he's everything we know about RuPaul's home life with hubby Georges LeBar and his romantic and family history.

RuPaul Charles and Georges LeBar first met in 1994 at the Limelight nightclub in New York City, where the Australia-born LeBar was celebrating his 21st birthday. Ru has said that it was his future husband's carefree dance moves and considerable height — Georges stands at a towering 6'8", four inches taller than the famously leggy RuPaul — that first caught his eye. "I'm tall," Charles told Vanity Fair. "I've never been able to put my arms around someone's shoulders who was taller than me."

Yes, Ru has publicly revealed that he and LeBar maintain an open marriage, telling Vanity Fair: "The hoax is that monogamy is something that can actually happen... I wouldn't want to put restraints on the person I love the most on this planet. Listen, if you get something that you cannot resist and that is gonna make you happy, go for it. Because the truth is, I know in my heart of hearts like I've ever known anything before, that man loves me more than anything else in this world."

He discussed the pair's pragmatic thinking around marriage in 2015 with Buzzfeed: "I don't stand on ceremony, I never want to conform to anything. We looked into 'marrying] if we could get a tax break and stuff but not because... Is he devoted to me? Am I devoted to him? Oh, hell yes. [But] I never want to be like everybody else."
