Another Report Mentions Trade Inquiries and Nico Hoerner

Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner was recently asked about trade rumors that pop up, and he was surprisingly candid about how, yes, sometimes he sees them. There was a specific one about the San Francisco Giants having interest in trying to acquire him and extend him, given the geographic connection to where he’s from, and given that he’s awesome.

His take was ultimately the same as ours: sure, teams probably reach out and talk to other teams about things, but that doesn’t mean a trade is actually all that likely to happen.

    Here’s hoping he takes that same positive attitude when reading the latest from Jon Heyman:

    “The Yankees and Cubs are fielding inquiries on their star 2B who are free agents after 2026 (Jazz Chisholm and Nico Hoerner).”

    Now, there are at least two wildly differing ways to read that sentence. One could be that the Cubs are out there and listening to offers for Nico Hoerner. Like, we are fielding inquiries because they know we’re listening. This version would be close to a guy actually being on the trade block, which I just have so much difficulty imagining is the case.

    The other way to read the report is what we’ve written before. Teams know the situation, and they love the player, so they reach out just to see if the Cubs will talk. If you pick up the phone, I suppose it’s technically true that you are “fielding” those inquires. Doesn’t mean you actually give any consideration to trade talks, shy of saying, “Yeah, sure, if you want to make us a truly insane offer, we’ll listen.”

    I’ll just reiterate what I’ve said before on this topic, because I stand by it:

    It should also be noted that this is not a report about active trade talks, or about the Cubs affirmatively going out there and trying to find a deal for Hoerner. Instead, it’s about a team thinking through its options, seeing a possible trade target with a geographic fit and possible extension opportunity. If I were the Giants, I would absolutely be reaching out to the Cubs on Nico Hoerner right now!

    Feels like that’s probably as far as it goes, though.

    Is there a version of this where trading Nico Hoerner could actually make sense for the Cubs? Sure, I can stretch and come up with it. Basically it would require all of the following:

    1.) The Cubs believe they cannot extend/re-sign Hoerner after 2026;

    2.) Hoerner’s value in a trade to the Giants (or some other club) is so massively enormous that the Cubs can magically transform their farm system in one fell swoop;

    3.) The Cubs believe Matt Shaw is best-suited for second base and will shockingly approach Hoerner’s total projected value in 2026; and

    4.) The Cubs know they are landing one of the third baseman in free agency, preferably Alex Bregman.

    If all of those things were true, then, OK, yes, it makes a lot of on-paper sense to consider a trade (and there’s a bit of a sliding scale on all of them). But really think about each of those items, and then think about how reasonable it is to expect all of them to be true. Because otherwise, it makes the most sense to keep one of your best players, let him help you win in 2026, and then evaluate the situation going forward as he approaches free agency.

    It all just strikes me as fairly unlikely. What seems far more likely is that the Giants are simply doing what they should be doing, and working through all possible options for improving their team. And the Cubs, for their part, are simply doing what they should be doing: listening, on the freak possibility that the Giants want to do something stupid.
