Miami outlasts Ohio State, wins Cotton Bowl to advance to CFP semifinals

A new national champion will be crowned in January. The Miami Hurricanes, the last at-large team to make the College Football Playoff as the No. 10 seed 12-team field, knocked off defending national champion Ohio State on Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round. The Canes established an early double-digit lead and held on for a 24-14 win over OSU in the Cotton Bowl, sealing the deal with CharMar’s 5-yard rushing touchdown with 55 seconds left.

In some ways, it was a tale of two halves. Ohio State, which had a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed, got off to a slow start, particularly in the 1st half. The biggest play of the first 2 quarters was a 70-yard pick-6 by Keionte Scott to make it 14-0 Miami. The score would remain that, as Ohio State missed a field-goal attempt before the half.

Ohio State’s offense woke up in the 2nd half, but it wasn’t enough for the Buckeyes to ever lead in the game. The Buckeyes went on back-to-back scoring drives on their first 2 possessions. They ended up outgaining Miami 332 total yards to 291.

An 11-play, 82-yard drive cut Miami’s lead to 14-7. The Canes answered with a scoring drive of their own, adding a field goal to get back to a double-digit lead (17-7). OSU, though, reclaimed momentum with a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to cut it down to 17-14, the game’s closest score since Miami broke the scoring ice with a Mark Fletcher touchdown reception at the 13:31 mark of the 2nd quarter.

Fletcher was again a star for the Hurricanes. He rushed 19 times for 90 yards, adding 2 catches for 25 yards. He earned MVP recognition.

As for the passing game, Carson Beck was 19-of-26 for 138 yards. Most importantly, Beck avoided throwing any interceptions.

Both Ohio State turnovers came via interceptions thrown by Julian Sayin. In addition to the Scott pick-6, Sayin was also intercepted on OSU’s final possession after the Buckeyes fell behind 24-14 with under 1 minute to go.

Ohio State had one of the nation’s top defenses in 2025. The Miami defense, though, made a big statement on Wednesday night in Arlington. In addition to winning the turnover battle, the Hurricanes also had more tackles for loss, with 7 to OSU’s 4. The Canes sacked Sayin 5 times, taking 42 yards off the Buckeye rushing total and bringing it down to 24 rushes for 45 yards.

The Hurricanes advance to the Fiesta Bowl, where they will play the winner of the Sugar Bowl showdown between No.3 seed Georgia and No. 6 seed Ole Miss.
