Jesse Metcalfe began his professional acting career in 1999 on the NBC soap opera Passions, where he portrayed Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald. Now, the beloved actor is reflecting on his wildest memories from the cult-classic daytime drama.
Metcalfe remained on Passions from 1999 until his exit in 2004, during which time Miguel was at the center of a high-profile love triangle involving cousins Charity Standish (Molly Stanton) and Kay Bennett (Originally Taylor Anne Mountz, followed by Deanna Wright, and finally Heidi Mueller).
Metcalfe recently appeared at the 5th annual Christmas Con at the New Jersey Expo Center, were he spoke with Soap Hub’s Bryan Beckley about his time on Passions and the most challenging role that he has played.
During the conversation, Metcalfe was asked about his wildest memory from the show. “Going to hell through a portal in my girlfriend's closet,” the actor recalled.
Metcalfe was referencing an early 2001 storyline in which Charity unknowingly had a portal to hell hidden in her closet, unleashing supernatural chaos throughout the fictional town of Harmony.
He added that another standout memory was “then dropping out of the sky covered in ectoplasm.”

Reflecting on the James E. Reilly created series, Metcalfe said, “I mean, we did some pretty zany stuff on that show, but in retrospect, I'm pretty proud to have been a part of that show because it was kind of it was kind of groundbreaking for the soap opera genre.”
Passions went on to earn cult-classic status for its willingness to embrace the supernatural in daytime storytelling. Over the years, the series featured unconventional arcs that included a neighborhood witch struggling to regain her powers, a mermaid who falls in love with a human, and an ongoing battle between good and evil that set the NBC soap apart from its daytime counterparts.
Passions aired for nearly a decade, before being canceled in 2007. The series was briefly revived on DirectTV’s The 101 Network, airing its final episode in August 2008. It was the last new soap opera commissioned by NBC, and one of the final daytime dramas launched before CBS introduced Beyond the Gates in 2025.
