Throughout her six seasons on Saturday Night Live, actress and comedian Ana Gasteyer was known for her offbeat roles, like NPR host Margaret Jo McCullen and singing teacher Bobbi Mohan-Culp.
In a December 2025 episode of fellow SNL star Amy Poehler's podcast, Good Hang, Gasteyer revealed that she took the sketch comedy show quite seriously, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. She explained that she wasn't able to fully enjoy being on SNL, which she joined in 1996, because she had "an A-student" approach to it.
"My greatest regret about this show, not that you would go back in time, is that I never settled into it and enjoyed it because I was always so aware of the time and of running down the clock," said Gasteyer during the interview.
She explained that sketches had to be cut each episode, meaning there was always a frantic energy at Studio 8H.
"There were always three sketches a night that might not make it, you know. So, I always felt like I had to like keep it moving, keep it moving," said Gasteyer to Poehler, per Entertainment Weekly.
Gasteyer said this is why she made a conscious decision to take her time when she reprised Bobbi Mohan-Culp for SNL50: The Anniversary Special, which aired in February 2025.
Gasteyer stepped away from SNL after its 27th season, which ended in 2002. Gasteyer discussed her SNL exit in a July 2024 interview with The Messy Parts podcast. She explained that she was pregnant with her first child during her last season at SNL. She said she was ready to focus on being a parent without having to deal with the exhausting nature of SNL. In addition, Gasteyer said she was satisfied with her work on the sketch comedy series.
She clarified that "There's times I wished I had stayed." She said, however, that she knew she wouldn't have felt comfortable asking for days off as a new mother. In addition, the comedian noted that she was the first SNL cast member to have a child.
"Because I was the first one and I felt like all eyes were on me on how I was going to pull that off. At that point, I felt like I'm going to step out, I've gotten what I need out of this, and figure out the rest. It was a little lonely to do that," said Gasteyer in the July 2025 podcast interview.
