Dawsons Creek Star Reveals Why She Wasnt in the Finale: I Was Pretty Sad

Actress Busy Philippsis opening up about her two-season run on the hit teen drama, Dawson's Creek.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Philipps discussed becoming a Dawson's Creek cast member during the show's fifth season, which premiered in 2001, on a December episode of Pod Meets World. As fans are aware, Philipps' character Audrey Liddell shared a room with  Joey Potter (Katie Holmes) while studying at Worthington University.

While recording the podcast episode, Philipps noted that she wasn't included in the show's two-part finale ("...Must Come to an End"), which aired in 2003. She said she was told that the show's creator, Kevin Williamson, chose not to feature Audrey in the finale because the character was introduced after his 1999 Dawson's Creek exit.

"It's crazy because I wasn't in the two-part finale. Even though, I had been on the show for the two years leading up to it. Kevin Williamson came back to write the finale. And I mean, I got paid for it, guys," said Philipps during the podcast interview. "But what I heard at the time was Kevin was like, 'I don't know this character. I didn't create her, so she's not going to be in the finale.' I wrote about it in my book, I was, like, pretty devastated. Like I was pretty sad."

She said that the situation "really hurt [her] feelings."

"I felt like I had given two seasons of my life to this show. People really loved my character. I really, you know, gave up like a big part of my life to be in Wilmington [North Carolina, where Dawson's Creek was filmed]," said Philipps.

She also said that Williamson issued an apology regarding the finale while rehearsing the September 2025 live Dawson's Creek Reunion special in New York City.

"He was just like, 'I was just in a moment in my career, my life, when like I had so many things going on. They had asked me at the very last minute to come back and write the finale. I had like a day and a half to do it, and I just made this kind of weird decision and I could have done better and I didn't, and I'm sorry,'" said Philipps on the podcast episode.

Philipps said she appreciated the apology and "started crying."

She explained that she starred in the acclaimed series,Freaks and Geeks, which had a one-season run in 1999. She said she thought Freaks and Geeks would have more longevity and was "really sort of let down" by how her career was going the year following the show's cancellation.

According to Philipps, she was considering "going back to college" before she was approached to audition to play Audrey.

"They wanted me to come in and read and then test for this new series regular part to be Joey Potter's roommate at college," explained the 46-year-old actress.
