MTV Channels Bid Farewell to Fans With Poignant Final Music Videos

Most of MTV's 24-hour music channels across the globe are permanently shut down as of Dec. 31, 2025, and fans are touched by the poignant final songs each network chose.

While MTV's flagship channel, which houses mostly reality shows, will continue, most of their music-only channels have officially gone dark, including all of the U.K.-based music channels, plus the ones in Australia, Poland, France, Brazil, and many others. The move was first announced in October 2025, as Paramount Skydance worked to decrease costs following their merger.

Any regional music channels remaining in the U.S. with cease to exist as distribution contracts expire. The move marks the end of an era that began in 1981 when MTV first launched.

Here's how the MTV 24-Hour music channels bid farewell to fans:

"MTV Music's last song was 'Video Killed The Radio Star,'" shared one fan on X alongside the music video for the 1979 song by The Buggles. The song itself was about the concerns regarding 20th-century tech and its impact on media and art, with lyrics like "We can't rewind, we've gone too far/Pictures came and broke your heart/Put the blame on VCR."

    MTV 90s' Last Song: "Goodbye"

MTV 90s was a channel devoted to playing hits from the 1990s, and their final music video was the perfect choice for the end of an era. According to one fan on X, the last song to ever play on the channel was the Spice Girls' 1998 hit "Goodbye" off their album Forever.

Lyrics to the song nod to a bittersweet farewell, singing, "Goodbye, my friend/I know you're gone/but I can still feel you here... So glad we made it/Time will never change it."

"With that song? I WOULD HAVE CRIED MY HEART OUT," said one devastated user, while another added, "Wow, I always thought that song was extremely sad in its day, (the end of the Spice Girls) it's super sad now."

Club MTV, formerly MTV Dance, was a channel devoted to playing electronic dance music, so the reported final song to play on Club MTV was a bit more upbeat: Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music."

"Yet they stopped the music. Curious," said one fan.

MTV Live's Last Song: "Dancing On My Own"

MTV Live was the first international HD channel that was dedicated solely to music videos. Its final song was the 2010 jam "Dancing On My Own" by Swedish singer-songwriter Robyn, according to a fan on X.

The MTV 00s channel, which was dedicated to popular songs of the 2000s, chose one of the biggest boy bands of the early '00s to close out the channel. They played NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye," according to a fan. Prior to that, they played Pink's "Please Don't Leave Me" and Dido's "Thank You."

"It's a great farewell; most channels that close simply go black without warning or a farewell message," said one fan, while another added, "Thanks for the memories MTV 00s."

MTV Germany's Last Song: "Musique Non-Stop"

MTV Germany closed out the channel with Kraftwerk's "Musique Non-Stop," which one fan called "an inspired choice." In the full list of final songs, they also included David Bowie, Radiohead, and Madonna.

MTV 80s' Last Song: "Together in Electric Dreams"

According to one X user, MTV 80s, which played music videos from the 1980s, ended on Philip Oakey and Giorgio Morode's "Together in Electric Dreams." The song was a sweet choice, with lyrics like, "However far it seems/Love never ends/We'll always be together/Together in electric dreams."
