The legendary actress, 92, was originally planning to suggest to Palm Royale showrunner, writer and executive producer Abe Sylvia that Lawrence, 76, appear in Season 2, but he called her before she had the chance to talk to him about it. Burnett recalled Sylvia asking, "How would you feel if we have Vicki on?" to which she replied, "Of course, I was thinking the same thing."

The pair starred alongside each other on Burnett's long-running, eponymous variety series The Carol Burnett Show, which aired from 1967 to 1978. In one of the show's recurring sketches, "The Family," Burnett played Eunice Higgins, while Lawrence portrayed her mother, Thelma, known as "Mama." The sketch went on to spawn the spinoff series Mama's Family.
The duo's onscreen reunion in Palm Royale marked a full-circle moment, with them once again playing a daughter and her mama, as Burnett's character calls her. According to the Annie star, it's a role Lawrence has joked is nothing new to her.

The comedy icon continued, "Here she was playing my mother on my show when we did 'The Family' sketches. She was 24 years old when she played mama, when we first cast her."
"That is so crazy," Kristen Wiig, Burnett's Palm Royale co-star, remarked.
Carol and Vicki pictured as Eunice and Mama in 1984Burnett and Lawrence's history is "legendary," as Sylvia calls it. The showrunner exclusively revealed to Parade, "Our not-so-secret mission was to make the entire season a love letter to Carol. There are easter eggs throughout the ten episodes – but our triumph in this regard was the gift of reuniting Carol with Vicki Lawrence."
Sylvia had always dreamed of working with Lawrence, and wanted to "carve out a meaningful space for her" this season of Palm Royale, so the character Lotte was developed specifically for her.

"Vicki plays Carol’s mother on the show. Something that truly delights me, but both Carol and Vicki were like, 'How’s that gonna work?' I told them both that because of [Mama's Family], Vicki has been Carol's mama in the public's consciousness for fifty-some odd years. I think we're good in this regard," Sylvia shared. "I love that they both embraced it."
And when the time came for the former Carol Burnett Show co-stars to reunite on the set of the Apple TV series, they slipped back into their old roles. Sylvia recounted, "Carol instantly fell into Eunice, 'Mama, what the hell are you doing dressed like that?' And Vicki replied as Mama, 'Look what you’ve done to me for crying out loud….the hell kind of get up…' The crew was in absolute stitches."
The Palm Royale creator added, "It will go down as truly one of the most touching moments I've ever borne witness to."
The Season 2 finale of Palm Royale will air on Wednesday, Jan. 14, on Apple TV.
