ROCHESTER, N.Y. — It’s almost time to say goodbye to 2025. This year, News10NBC’s team has covered so many stories across the region, but some have really captured people’s imagination. Whether its video showing a possible mountain lion in Rochester, seemingly unexplained booms in Webster, or some spooky tales of the SUNY Geneseo campus, here are some of the biggest mysteries of 2025. Thank you for watching our coverage all year.
Was there really a mountain lion in Rochester?
Social media blew up in July after doorbell footage showed what appeared to be a big cat wandering around Rauber Street in Rochester. The Rochester Police Department got multiple 911 calls that night, with people reporting similar sightings and some believing they had seen a mountain lion. The sightings led to a shelter-in-place order on Rauber Street.
Authorities have not been able to verify any reports of a mountain lion in Rochester and there were no reports of injuries. The last time New York State had a confirmed mountain lion was 2011. After the sightings, local businesses had some fun on social media, superimposing a big cat to photos. News10NBC spoke with some people who believe they saw the big cat and with experts in big cat ecology. See our coverage:

This year, News10NBC investigated a series of mysterious explosion sounds in Webster. One video of our coverage has nearly half a million views on YouTube. People on social media have thrown around ideas of what could be causing the sounds, but there is no answer yet.
Joell Calcagno, a homeowner who we spoke with, said the explosions usually happen in the middle of the night and began in September. Webster officials investigated but found “no activity in the area that would explain the alleged booms/explosions.” See that full story here.
We also spoke with Nikki Cheong, who lives in Tampa, Fla., and saw our original story on the Webster booms. She has been experiencing similar sounds since 2017 but no one has provided an explanation. The explosions often rattle her dogs and her home. See the full story here.
News10NBC also got video showing a flash of light just before a boom in Webster. The video is from Aug. 1 from a doorbell camera at the corner of Lake Road and Bay Road. Our First Alert Weather team checked the forecast from Aug. 1. Data recorded at the Rochester airport showed no storms, but there was a notation for thunder. See the full story here.
Is SUNY Geneseo actually haunted?
Imagine coming face-to-face with a ghost right in your own dorm room. That’s what one former student at SUNY Geneseo says happened to him back in 1985. Now he’s featured in the chart-topping new Netflix documentary series, “True Haunting.”
“It was bizarre. I didn’t believe those things could happen. My dad was a science teacher,” said Chris Di Cesare, the subject of the first three episodes of the series. “And to see this thing come through the wall and look at me, to hear this voice coming from nowhere. It’s just – I didn’t know if there’s a gas leak in the room or drugs in my food or practical joke, mass hysteria, S.A.D. But I went down the checklist trying to see what’s happening, and the only thing that was left was the occult. The paranormal.”
Di Cesare says it was an honor to tell his story in the series produced by James Wan, director of other horror films such as “Saw” and “The Conjuring.” See the full story here.
