Ramadan Sobhi sentenced to one year in prison for exam fraud

The Giza Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced Ramadan Sobhi, a player for Pyramids FC, to one year in prison with hard labor over the case of exam fraud in which he and three others were accused.

The defendants faced charges of facilitating impersonation at a private institute, allowing individuals to take exams in place of the actual defendant in exchange for money.

The court also convicted the individual who took the exams for the other defendant and sentenced him to the same punishment.

The court acquitted a security guard involved in the case, and sentenced the fourth defendant, who remains at large and is known as “Tarek al-Masry,” to 10 years in prison.

The courtroom was filled with the player’s relatives and fans, along with several football players, including Sherif Ekramy and Ali Gabr, who appeared shocked and apprehensive as the verdict was announced.

Security forces implemented strict measures around the courthouse to secure the session.

Al-Masry Al-Youm observed Sobhi being transported under heavy security escort to his prison at kilometer 10.5 on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road after the verdict was issued.

The player appeared visibly distraught, while his companions remained silent.

The defendant’s lawyer announced that he would appeal the verdict as soon as the reasoning behind it was issued.

Sobhi confessed in his statement to the prosecution that he did not attend classes regularly and did not take any exams at the institute.

He confirmed that he relied on the fourth defendant to complete the registration procedures and obtain enrollment documents in exchange for regular payments.

Sobhi explained that his interest in these documents was for travel and social appearance purposes, denying any knowledge of the exam details or any impersonation.

The acquitted security guard, his family, and his defense team on the other hand celebrated his verdict, having affirmed their belief in his innocence from the beginning.

They pointed out that his role was limited to apprehending the impersonator inside the institute, and that he was one of the reasons the incident was uncovered.
